Text transcribed from caption: #760 LONDON MISSIONARY SOCIETY OBSERVES 150TH ANNIVERSARY The 150th anniversary of the London Missionary Society was observed in the British Capital with a week of special meetings. Since its founding in London during September, 1795, the Society has commissioned 1,800 men and women to serve in India, China, Africa, Madagascar, Papua and the South Seas, and has spent about 55 million dollars. Top half of photo shows the Lord and Lady Mayoress of London receiving Chief Seretse Khama, hereditary chieftain of the Bamangwato people of Bechuanaland, S. Africa, whose grandfather, Chief Khama, attended the Centenary meetings of the Society. The Lord and Lady Mayoress are both active in the Society’s work. He retires in September from the wardenship of Bermondsey Settlement (Methodist), which he helped to found 60 years ago. In the course of a long life spent in religious, social and educational work, Dr. Lidgett has been vice-chancellor of London University and a leader of the London County Council. It also is one of the few photos ever taken in the Stock Exchange here. It is a scene during the “Service Thanksgiving” held there. Joy Webb, composer of two religious songs with a "twist" beat, strums her guitar during a recording session in Middlesex, England. The attractive brunette and a group of male and female voices recorded the tunes which featured guitars and drums. Her "pop" songs were "It's an Open Secret," and "We're Going to Set the Whole World A' Singing." Capt. Webb said the songs were "as near as we dare go to a commercial sound."
