Description:
Here are some of the thousands of refugees of Northern Vietnam who left their homes after the communists took over the area under the terms of the Geneva Pact. Although the French sent all available shipping to help them, under international law the would-be refugees had to make their own way out. They did this, despite high seas and the frailest of craft, pushing their way to freedom in an evacuation that took several days. These refugees are shown after they were taken aboard the French ship "Jules Verne." Despite the hazardous voyage, one refugee was able to hold on to her belongings which she carried in baskets on her head.

Father Kenneth Baker, S.J., editor of Homiletic and Pastoral Review, was among one of the speakers and China scholars who spoke at the 13th Annual Chinese Cultural Conference sponsored by the Institute of Chinese Culture on Saturday, May 3rd, at the Hotel Biltmore in NYC. Seated at far right is the Institute's Acting President, Rev. Paul Chan, who took this post when Rev. Raymond De Jaegher died in January. To the right of the podium is William A. Rusher, publisher of National Review and keynote speaker at the luncheon. The all-day conference attracted Chinese-Americans and Americans interested in the historical, political, and cultural dimensions of traditional Chinese culture in the context of realities in Mainland China and Taiwan, and the preservation of Chinese culture among Taiwanese and Chinese-Americans. An eyewitness assessment was given by Chinese-born Daniel Kelly (whose father had been a Presbyterian medical missionary in Mainland China) who had been held imprisoned for 20 years since age 17 by the Chinese communists and was released only in 1979.
