Because of his age, a special dispensation from the Pope was necessary before the new brother could be invested. Corbinian Hofmeister, OSB, abbot of St. Michael’s Benedictine Abbey in Metten, Germany, is shown here (left) with the Rt. Rev. Alcuin Deutsch of St. John’s Abbey, Collegeville. One of the first German civilians to obtain State Department permission to enter the U.S. since the end of the war, Abbott Hofmeister was imprisoned in the Gestapo headquarters in Berlin in 1943. In 1944 he was moved to the notorious Dachau concentration camp where for a year he was fellow pioneer of Pastor Martin Niemoeller, famous Protestant leader. FRANCES XAVIER CABRINI CHICAGO -- Roman Catholic chaplains of World War II ascend the altar at Soldiers Field, here, to offer special prayers to St. Frances Xavier Cabrini before an illuminated 75-foot portrait of the recently canonized saint. The procession was one of many that featured a colorful religious pageant sponsored by the Holy Name Union of the archdiocese of Chicago, to pay homage to the Italian-born nun who became America's first saint. Later the crowd of 100,000 who filled the huge amphitheater heard Samuel Cardinal Stritch, Archbishop of Chicago, laud the virtues of Mother Cabrini. Jacobs, father superior of the St. Regis mission on the St. Lawrence River here, is the first of North America’s 37,000 Iroquois to become a Jesuit. A full-blooded Mohawk (one of the member tribes of the Iroquois), Father Jacobs is said to be the only priest to serve at one time in two provinces, two countries and under three bishops. His parish lies partly in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, and partly in New York State. And his 3, 100 parishioners are both Canadian and American. Hugo Lassalle, S.J., Superior of all Jesuits in Japan, is one of the few surviving eye witnesses of the atom bombing of Hiroshima. Father Lassalle, who is to attend the forthcoming General Congregation of the Jesuit Fathers in Rome --where he will report on missionary activity in the Orient -- recalled the explosion as a gigantic wave of heat followed by a blinding flash. “Then everything collapsed, the ceilings, the windows, the furniture.” Father Lassalle, a veteran of 15 years service in Japan, was born in Germany. Text transcribed from caption: C-4117 INDIAN RELICS SHOWN AT MARTYR SHRINE AURIESVILLE, N.Y. -- A family group kneels in prayer at the Shrine of the North American Martyrs here before a painting of the first saints to die on American soil. Picture was painted by a Jewish artist and donated to the Shrine. This year commemorative services mark the 300th anniversary of the death of the two martyrs, St. Isaac Jogues, S.J., and St. John de LaLande, Jesuit lay brother. They were put to death in 1646 after being tortured by Mohawk Indians. Four years before their martyrdom St. Rene Goupil, S.J., suffered the same fate after being captured with St. Isaac Jogues.
