Mary Luke, superior general of the Sisters of Loretto, is shown during a
visit to a mission school in Bolivia in 1960. She is one of 15 women named by
Pope Paul VI to serv as auditors (listeners) at the third session of the
Second Vatican Council. Mother Mary Luke is also head of the Conference of
Major Religious Superiors of Women's Institutes of America. Under her
direction, the Sisters of Loretto operate 21 high schools, 76 elementary
schools and two colleges in the U.S. and teach at three South American
