Text transcribed from caption: Suggested for use with RNS series on retirement PC-45905 KEEPING BUSY Maude Semans gives serious attention to her next move during a game of Chinese checkers at a senior citizens activity center in Naples, N.Y. Many church agencies which provide such centers and other programs for the retired are finding that many in the older generation, characteristically proud and independent, shun any aid which hints of “welfare.” These people would rather try to live on their Social Security -- increasingly difficult in these days of rampaging inflation -- than take anything that smacks of “charity,” such as food stamps or free meals. There is also the problem of social isolation among the aged. After one stops working, for many persons their main contact with the outside world, there is a tendency for the retired person to become a “loner.” For these people, senior citizens centers are an answer, providing activities and social contact. Text transcribed from caption: PC-45815 CYPRUS LEADER ATTACKS FOES NEW YORK -- Archbishop Makarios, the ousted President of Cyprus, addresses worshippers at the Greek Orthodox Holy Trinity Cathedral in New York City. In a strong political statement, he criticized both the Greek junta that allegedly instigated the coup against him and the Turkish forces that invaded Cyprus. An official of the Greek archdiocese, which has sought to remain politically neutral on Cyprus, said Archbishop Makarios had not been invited to speak but did so on his own initiative when Archbishop Iakovos extended him greetings at the close of the service. Text transcribed from caption: C-45901 NUNS RUN FOSTER HOME ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Sister Gaye Moorhead and one of her charges discover that one of life’s little pleasures, a wagon ride, can be found right in their own yard. Sister Gaye and Sister Rachel Parlavecchio operate the first foster family care home endorsed by their order, the Sisters of Mercy, and, as far as they know, the first of its kind in the Rochester diocese run by religious. Called Andrew’s Center, the home occupies half of St. Andrew’s Convent in Rochester and is leased from the parish. It is known as a special service home and referrals come only from the Monroe County Department of Social Services. “This means that we take children with special problems, or those that are hard to place,” said Sister Gaye. Such children include the black, the bi-racial or older child, those that are slightly physically or mentally handicapped, children from abuse or neglect situations, those with mild behavioral problems and siblings who need to be placed together. Currently the two nuns are caring for six children, the maximum number the home can provide for. The oldest is 15, the youngest two and a half. Andrew’s Center is not primarily an educational facility -- children attend local schools -- but is more of a transitional home for those waiting for a more permanent placement with a regular foster family or return to their former home. He takes judo lessons. At six feet two and 235 pounds, it’s not, as Father Streb explains it, for protection. “I’m interested in it mainly as a sport,” said the assistant past of St. Charles Borromeo Church in Elmira Heights, N.Y., “I thought it would be a challenge. Text transcribed from caption: C-45862 LAUNCHES ADOPTION DRIVE NEW YORK -- New York Gov. Malcolm Wilson takes a few minutes out of a press conference to talk to a youngster at the New York Foundling Hospital, which is run by the New York archdiocese. The governor visited the facility to kickoff a special drive to disseminate information on the adoption of handicapped and hard-to-place children. The statewide drive, which is expected to last six months, began at the Foundling Hospital because the facility placed more children for adoption, a total of 207, last year than any other adoption agency in New York State. “The permanence of a home is important to everyone, but especially children,” the governor observed. New York State has about 2,000 hard-to-place youngsters on its adoption role, but the governor pointed out that recent legislation not only makes it easier for parents to adopt but that economic assistance is available. Text transcribed from caption: C-45698 HAPPY DAY FOR EIGHT YOUNGSTERS NEW YORK -- While Confirmation is normally not an unusual sacrament, it is for a group of eight students -- all of them brain-damaged or emotionally disturbed children -- as they are confirmed by Auxiliary Bishop Patrick Ahern of New York during a ceremony in St. Eugene’s Chapel of Sacred Heart Church in the Bronx. The youngsters are children at the Murray Hill Classes, a nonsectarian private school for children who have been excluded from public school because of the severity of their illnesses. The school rents the chapel from Sacred Heart Parish and uses it as a classroom building. Father Joseph Gleeson (right), associate pastor at the parish, is a volunteer teacher in the school’s released time religious education program. It was he who prepared the youngsters for Confirmation. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (CS-NY-6C-74-DS)
