Clincy, president of the National Conference of Christians and Jews. The citation honored Mr. O’Connor as a “public servant of rare distinction and accomplishment.” It was presented at a dinner in the Waldorf Astoria hotel attended by a large number of notables. Text transcribed from caption: PRESENT CITATIONS TO HEROIC CHAPLAINS NEXT OF KIN #1155 NEW YORK -- Father George B. Ford, New York, presents sitations [sic] to next of kin of four Protestant, Jewish and Catholic Navy chaplains who died together in the sinking of the transport Dorchester in 1943 after giving their lifebelts to others aboard the ship. The citations were given by the Committee of Catholics for Human Rights at a dinner in the Hotel Roosevelt, New York. The four recipients, shown left to right, were Mrs. Clarke V. Poling and Mrs. George L. Fox, wives of the Protestant chaplains; Mrs. Leonard A. Schwoebel, sister of Catholic Chaplain John P. Washington; and Mrs. Alexander D. Goode, wife of the Jewish chaplain. The award was presented at the annual Jesuit Mission dinner in New York by Father John J. McGinty, S.J., provincial of the Jesuits’ New York Province (second left). Looking on are Father Robert I. Gannon, S.J., superior of the Jesuit Missions residence, New York, who served as toastmaster (left); and Auxiliary Bishop John J. Maguire of New York. Father Gannon told about 1,600 guests at the dinner that in naming Sister Mary Augustine, the Jesuits honored all modern missionaries laboring in public relations. Text transcribed from caption: C-32141 CYO CITES BOB HOPE NEW YORK -- Bob Hope, noted TV comedian (right), receives the 1964 Club of Champions Medal presented by the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) of New York for “dedication and service to the youth of America and particularly to the U.S. armed forces.” Presentation was made by Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, at the CYO’s annual dinner. Shown with them is J. Peter Grace, CYO president. The citation to Mr. Hope noted that he has made annual Christmas tours of military bases overseas with an entertainment group. He was in South Vietnam at Christmas. The irrepressible comedian told the audience Cardinal Spellman had visited all the fighting fronts -- “Korea, South Vietnam…and the World’s Fair.” He added that he appreciated the friendship and goodwill of Catholics -- “I have to do a lot of flying…and they’ve got good connections.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BB-NY-2B-65-NAB)

Text transcribed from caption: C-30710 PRIEST GIVEN TITLE OF PROTOPRESBYTER NEW YORK -- Pope Paul VI has conferred a rare title -- that of Protopresbyter -- upon Father Andrew Rogosh, assistant secretary of the Catholic Near East Welfare Association. He is the only Protopresbyter in the United States and one of the few in the Catholic world. Title is a distinction in the Byzantine-Russian Rite which resembles to some extent the rank of Protonotary Apostolic in the Roman Rite. It carries with it certain privileges of dress and precedence, including the right to wear the mitre [sic. miter]. Text transcribed from caption: PCN-30989 PHOTOGRAPHER RECEIVES TWO BROTHERHOOD AWARDS NEW YORK-Dr. Lewis Webster Jones, president of the National Conference of Christians and Jews (right) presents two Mass Media Brotherhood Award for outstanding service to better human relations to Gordon Parks, photographer for Life magazine. Mr. Parks is the first to win two of the awards in the same year. He was cited for an article and a series of photos appearing in Life, Aug. 16, 1963. His article, “Long Search for Pride,” dealt with racial prejudice. The photo series, “How It Feels to be Black,” interpreted the emotions of a Negro child. Brotherhood Awards in the fields of newspapers and magazines were presented by the NCCJ to five other winners and eleven recipients received Certificates of Recognition.
