About this Collection

Conceived by journalist Louis Minsky (1909-1957), Religious News Service (RNS) was established in 1934 as an affiliated but independently managed agency of the National Conference of Jews and Christians (later the National Conference of Christians and Jews), and was dedicated to providing authoritative and bias-free news about religion and ethics to both the secular and religious press. This collection contains photographs documenting Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox, and Jewish groups. Coverage of Protestants (especially mainline Protestants) and Catholics constitutes the bulk of the images. View the collection guide to learn more. Negroes pray for justice.
Description:
Text transcribed from caption: P-27052 NEGROES PRAY FOR JUSTICE ALBANY, Ga. -- Negro demonstrators held a prayer meeting in front of the Albany (Ga.) City Hall to appeal for a just verdict for 11 Freedom Riders on trial there. Police form a cordon in the rear to forestall any violence. The Negro demonstrators, whose number sometimes rose to 700, held mass meetings in the Shiloh Baptist church. Text transcribed from caption: (ALB1)ALBANY, GA., Aug. 5--KING’S CHILDREN HELP PACK EXTRA PROVISIONS-- Mrs. Martin Luther King, wife of the jailed integration leader, Rev. Martin Luther King, gets an assist from their three children as they pack this picnic basket with extra provisions. This is the 10th day the Atlanta pastor has spent in jail for his integration activity. From left are: Martin Luther King, III, four-years-old; Yolanda Denise King, 6; and Dexter Scott King, 18-months old. Dexter was named after the Dexter Avenue Baptist church in Montgomery, Ala., where his father started is integration work about six years ago. (fn11925fn) 1962
