Sherrill, chairman of the General Commission on Army and Navy Chaplains, enjoys a joke with General of Army Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Admiral of Fleet Chester W. Nimitz at a luncheon here of the General Commission. Editors attending the annual meeting of the Associated Church Press here were guests at luncheon, and heard Gen. Eisenhower warn that “we’ll all disappear in the dust of an atomic explosion” unless there is “a moral regeneration throughout the world.” Both Eisenhower and Nimitz praised work of chaplains during war. At the latest conference of the United Council of Church Women, just closed at Washington, D.C., Mrs. Sibley lived at the headquarters offices of the National Council of Negro Women. She is shown at a desk in the building making plans for the day’s sessions, which were held at the First Congregational Church in Washington.

Robert J. White, dean of the School of Law, Catholic University of America, takes the oath which henceforth distinguishes him as the first commodore chaplain in the history of the American Navy. The precedent-setting ceremony took place in the office of Rear Admiral William N. Thomas (left), USN, who administered the oath in the presence of a number of Navy officials, Congressmen and high government officials. Former national chaplain of the American Legion and vice-president, 1934-36, of FIDAC, a world organization of World War I veterans, Father White was nominated for the commission by President Truman. The denominational banner was prominent among the thousands carried from the Washington Monument, in background, to the Lincoln Memorial during the March. Religious participation in the demonstration was vividly evident, with more than half of the banners identifying marching groups as those of churches, synagogues and related agencies and organizations.
