AMENDMENT WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Members of the House Judiciary Committee called
on numerous leading American churchmen to express their views on proposed
amendments to the U.S. Constitution to allow voluntary prayer and
Bible-reading in the public schools. Among witnesses were Dr. Daniel Poling,
left, editor of Christian Herald magazine, who said he favors such an
amendment, and Dr. Martin E. Marty, Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod pastor and
associate professor at the University of Chicago Divinity School, who opposed
the proposals. They discuss the subject here with Prof. Paul Freund of
