Text transcribed from caption: P-30994 PRAYER HEARING WITNESSES WAIT TO TESTIFY WASHINGTON, D.C. -- School officials from two communities that initially defied the U.S. Supreme Court ban against classroom devotional practices flank Protestant Episcopal Bishop William F. Creighton of Washington, D.C., who supported the Court’s action. All were waiting to testify at House Judiciary Committee hearings on some 147 proposals for a Constitutional amendment to return prayer and Bible reading to public schools. At left is David A. Robertson, supervising principal of New Cumberland, Pa., schools, where devotional practices were continued until the school district was threatened with an injunction. Albert Neuman, at right, is commissioner of the board of education at Hawthorne, N.J., where the State Superior Court ordered an end to classroom devotions.
