About this Collection

Conceived by journalist Louis Minsky (1909-1957), Religious News Service (RNS) was established in 1934 as an affiliated but independently managed agency of the National Conference of Jews and Christians (later the National Conference of Christians and Jews), and was dedicated to providing authoritative and bias-free news about religion and ethics to both the secular and religious press. This collection contains photographs documenting Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox, and Jewish groups. Coverage of Protestants (especially mainline Protestants) and Catholics constitutes the bulk of the images. View the collection guide to learn more. Digitization of some of the images in this collection made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Sherrill, chairman of the General Commission on Army and Navy Chaplains, enjoys a joke with General of Army Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Admiral of Fleet Chester W. Nimitz at a luncheon here of the General Commission. Editors attending the annual meeting of the Associated Church Press here were guests at luncheon, and heard Gen. Eisenhower warn that “we’ll all disappear in the dust of an atomic explosion” unless there is “a moral regeneration throughout the world.” Both Eisenhower and Nimitz praised work of chaplains during war. Robert J. White, dean of the School of Law, Catholic University of America, takes the oath which henceforth distinguishes him as the first commodore chaplain in the history of the American Navy. The precedent-setting ceremony took place in the office of Rear Admiral William N. Thomas (left), USN, who administered the oath in the presence of a number of Navy officials, Congressmen and high government officials. Former national chaplain of the American Legion and vice-president, 1934-36, of FIDAC, a world organization of World War I veterans, Father White was nominated for the commission by President Truman. Text transcribed from caption: PC-29802 THE WASHINGTON MARCH -- 200,000 STRONG WASHINGTON, D.C. -- About 100,000 were expected…more than twice that many came to the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Early in the morning the pace of arrivals was slow. A happy, picnic atmosphere began to build around the base of the Washington Monument (in background). Then, near noon, caravans of buses that had been jamming outlying highways began to pour into the city. By the time the March started, a steady flow of people was pouring down Constitution and Independence Avenues. They jammed around the front of the Lincoln Memorial, lined the edges of the long reflecting pool, and listened to Freedom songs, entertainers and speakers.
