Text transcribed from caption on reverse: ROME, 10 February 1965 - ROME COVERED UNDER THE SNOW! An unusual aspect of the town appeared this morning to Romans: the snow was falling and Rome was as just as beautiful! People soon went out to say “welcome” to his unexpected guest, and some amusing scenes were taken in the streets, before the famous monuments and squares. As the Pope read the pledge to the 26 new Princes of the Church present, each responded, “I promise.” The cardinal received their new scarlet birettas -- three-peaked clerical caps -- but the ritual of conferring the traditional galero, or Red Hat, was eliminated. The galeros, best known insignia of a cardinal, were delivered later to the prelates at their Rome residence. Cardinal Shehan was the only American prelate among the 27 new cardinals named by the Pope. One of them was not present at the public consistory, Angel Cardinal Herrera y Oria, Bishop of Malaga, Spain. He will receive his Red Hat from Generalissimo Franco. The drama, which depicts Pope Pius XII as failing to denounce publicly Nazi anti-Jewish crimes, was banned by the Rome Prefecture under the Vatican-Italy concordat which protects the “sacred character” of the Eternal City. The explosion at the Vatican Gate of Santanna on the Via di Porta Angelica injured no one, but caused some damage to buildings and windows. The barracks are located just inside the Gate of Santanna on the Via di Porta Angelica where a bomb was detonated damaging building and breaking windows. Italian police said the explosion was in protest against the banning of “The Deputy,” controversial play which shows Pope Pius XII as failing to denounce publicly Nazi atrocities against the Jews. Police were holding an actor who was to play a role in the drama barred by the Rome Prefecture. The Gate of Santanna is used mainly by Vatican employees and is some distance from the main entrances to Vatican City. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-2C-65-NAB)

The other Eastern Orthodox leader was Metropolitan Chrysostom of Hydra, secretary of the Third Pan-Orthodox Conference held at Rhodes, Greece, last November. Metropolitan Meliton presided over the conference. Greeting the two Orthodox delegates as “dear brothers in Christ,” the Pope said their meeting was a “profoundly happy event.” The Rhodes conference authorized individual Orthodox Churches to continue exploration with the Catholic Church on means for establishing closer relations. It voted, however, to postpone any collective approach to Rome for unity talks until the end of the Vatican Council. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-2C-65-NAB)
