NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Dr. Benjamin J. Anderson, a United Presbyterian pastor
at Princeton, N.J., since 1948 has been named Chaplain of Smith College at
Northampton, Mass. Assuming the post after Labor Day, he will be the first
Negro to serve in the post at the noted women’s school. Dr. Anderson has
been active in both religious and civic circles, spearheading integration of
his own congregation and working with neighborhood integration and human
rights groups. Earlier this year he was named as the first chairman of the
Commission on Religion and Race of the Presbyterian Synod of New Jersey.
