Text transcribed from caption: A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A RABBI #1825 Rabbi David de Sola Pool of Shearith Israel Congregation in New York, talks over community problems with members of his synagogue. In most Jewish centers, it is customary for the rabbi to meet regularly with representatives of his congregation. The rabbi also attends other types of gatherings in which community leaders and others meet for informal exchanges of views on matters of especial interest to the Jewish community. Women often make up a majority of the attendance at these meetings. (No. 8 of a series) Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BH-NY-TFD-3-B-6-R-J)

Text transcribed from caption: A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A RABBI #1824 Among the post-war responsibilities of the synagogue is the reception - and care, if necessary - of discharged Jewish veterans. Rabbi David de Sola Pool of Shearith Israel Congregation in New York is shown greeting a soldier newly back from service in the China-Burma-India theater. Some Jewish servicemen have shown a desire to study for the rabbinate, and others have displayed greater interest in religion, as a result of their experiences overseas. Shearith Israel gave 163 young men to the army, navy and other services, as indicated by its service flag. Three were killed in active service. Description:
Text transcribed from caption: A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A RABBI #1823 Teaching Jewish ceremonies and customs is part of the regular curriculum of religious schools conducted by rabbis. Training of youth in moral principles is one of the most important duties of the rabbi. Rabbi David de Sola Pool, of Shearith Israel Congregation, New York, is shown facing a responsive audience as he expounds on teachings of the sacred Torah. The Hebrew inscription on the blackboard reads; “Say Little and Do Much” - a Talmudic injunction. Religious schools are held four times a week and on Sundays, and pupils range in age from 6 to 16. On his 13th birthday, a Jewish boy becomes a “Bar Mitzvah” (a son of the commandment), which binds him to perform the precepts of his religion. In this photo, Dr. David de Sola Pool, of Shearith Israel Synagogue, New York, is shown using an ediphone as he catches up with his mail, which ranges from 30 to 60 letters a day. In addition to his regular duties in the synagogue, the rabbi is often invited to serve on community committees and to lend his active support to educational and philanthropic enterprises. Here Dr. David de Sola Pool, Rabbi of Shearith Israel, New York’s oldest Jewish congregation, relaxes over a cup of tea with Mrs. Pool after a busy morning. In addition to holding three synagogue services daily, visiting sick members of his community, teaching in the religious school, preparing sermons and handling correspondence, the rabbi must also find time for community activities of varied kinds. Often working seven days a week, from early morning until late at night, he welcomes the odd moments when he can recuperate his energy and strength. Shown here is Dr. David de Sola Pool, rabbi of Congregation Shearith Israel in New York, as he preaches at Sabbath services. Overhead hangs the Perpetual Lamp found in all synagogues, while behind the pulpit (“bema”) stand the carved doors of the Ark where the sacred scrolls of the Law - most precious possession of every Jewish temple - are preserved. The scrolls are taken out at intervals to be read aloud. (No. 2 of a series) Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BH-NY-TFD-3-B-6-R-J)

Description:
Text transcribed from caption: A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A RABBI #1800 Seated in his study, Dr. David de Sola Pool, rabbi of Congregation Shearith Israel in New York City, devotes part of his day to reading the ancient Hebrew Talmud, which Jews rank next to the Bible in importance. Study of the Talmud, compendium of Jewish law and teaching, is considered by Orthodox to be the most important duty in Judaism, because it leads to proper living and action. The rabbi is primarily a scholar and teacher rather than a minister and his main duty is to guide and instruct. Dr. Pool wears a ring which bears the crest of the Sola family of Portugal, which dates back to the ninth century, and of which he is a descendant. Text transcribed from caption: A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A RABBI #1799 Once occupying a rented building on what is now South William Street, New York, the Shearith Israel (Remnant of Israel) Synagogue is an imposing structure of mixed classical architecture located on Central Park West. Dr. David de Sola Pool conducts services every morning and evening, and on the Sabbath he holds three services. Shearith Israel is an Orthodox synagogue, representing the most numerous branch of Jewry. Other Jewish groups are the conservative and reform, which differ in certain beliefs and practices, but preserve the essential features of Judaism. Congregation Shearith Israel, frequently referred to as the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue, dates back to 1655 and is the oldest Jewish congregation in North America. Text transcribed from caption: HONORABLY RETIRED #1787 NEW YORK -- Almost a tradition in itself is this old bell standing outside the rectory of St. George’s Protestant Episcopal church here. Made in England, it cost 250 pounds sterling and was presented to the church by Thomas H. Smith in 1818. For many years it hung in the old church in Beekman Street and afterward in the chapel at 14th Street. In 1905 it was removed to its present site after it was reported that it had been cracked by improper ringing. Once asked by the city Fire Department if the bell could be rung in case of fire, the vestry called attention to a by-law of the church directing the sexton “to have the bell rung at all alarms of fire.” Shown inspecting the bell is the rector of St. George’s, the Rev. Elmore M. McKee. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BH-NY-MES-3C-6-O-A-E)
