BERLIN -- Berlin was a divided city of light and darkness on Christmas 1962;
separated from neighbors and loved ones in the Eastern sector by the
Communist wall, West Berliners erected some 400 Christmas trees as a
substitute greeting. The wall will be crossed this year. After 11 days of
negotiation, East Germany agreed to West Germany’s proposal to admit West
Berliners into the Eastern portions of the city during the Christmas season.
Hower, the Communist regime will not permit its residents to enter the West.
Passes will be issued to West Berliners for one day, good until midnight.
