CUSHING BOSTON -- Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston, receives
the Republic of China’s Special Grand Cordon of the Order of the Brilliant
Star for his “invaluable contribution towards higher education in China”
and his “eminent service to human freedom.” Presenting the award for
President Chiang Kai-shek is Chinese Ambassador Tingfu F. Tsinag. Looking on
is exiled Archbishop Paul Yu-Pin of Nanking, rector of the recently opened
Fu-Jen University in Taiwan. Cardinal Cushing also was cited for his
“unremitting efforts” in raising about $1,000,000 for the university,
which originally was located in Nanking, but was confiscated by the
