Council of Churches, Richard Cardinal Cushing, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Boston, is shown as he was introduced to a large audience at the Sudbury Methodist Church. Cardinal Cushing (hand on chin) is introduced by the Rev. Blaine Taylor (standing) of the host congregation. In a 90-minute talk, followed by a half hour question-answer period, Cardinal Cushing recognized Protestantism's early start in ecumenism ("Catholics have a long way to catch up"), held that the "spirit of the scholars" must reach the grassroots level if the ecumenical movement is to advance, and foresaw "unity of the spirit," not union, in this century. Edward Kennedy at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross where a religious and civic memorial honored the late President Kennedy. A Solem Pontifical Requiem Mass was celebrated by the cardinal before some 1,800 invited guests including Protestant, Orthodox and Jewish clergymen, federal officials and state and civic dignitaries.
