Addressing the more than 1,500 religious leaders, government figures and political and social scientists is Nicolai N. During the three-hour party, the cardinal greeted 2,000 guests and 175 children. Each guest paid a $25 admission, which pays for the care of one foundling for five days. A highlight of the party was the appearance of Santa Claus, who distributed gifts to the great delight of the young ones. Cardinal Spellman has announced he will spend Christmas this year with military personnel in Antarctica. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BB-NY-12B-63-RB)

Text transcribed from caption: C-31005 CARDINAL’S EFFORTS FOR ISRAEL DISCLOSED NEW YORK -- For the first time it was revealed that Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York (left), had a part in the admission of Israel to the United Nations in 1949. The disclosure was made by Charles H. Silver, president of Beth Israel Hospital (right), in introducing the cardinal at the hospital’s 75th anniversary dinner. With them is Mayor Robert F. Wagner. Mr. Silver reported that Cardinal Spellman contacted a number of South American countries in support of Israel’s entry into the U. N. These contacts, Mr. Silver said, were instrumental in the General Assembly approving the new nation’s membership. He added that the prelate’s assistance made “one of the most amazing stories of brotherhood and fellowship among men of good will.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BB-NY-5C-64-NAB)

Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, who secured the permission of the late Pop John XXIII to bring the statue to the U.S., is shown at right after he had blessed the Pieta aboard a barge in the harbor. Pope Paul VI also approved the cardinal’s request. Bound for the World’s Fair where an estimated 15 million people will view it at the Vatican Pavilion, the masterpiece was insured for $6 million while in transit. Another statue, “The Good Shepherd,” also brought from Vatican City, was insured for $2 million. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BB-NY-4C-64-W)
