Description:
Text transcribed from caption: A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A RABBI #1825 Rabbi David de Sola Pool of Shearith Israel Congregation in New York, talks over community problems with members of his synagogue. In most Jewish centers, it is customary for the rabbi to meet regularly with representatives of his congregation. The rabbi also attends other types of gatherings in which community leaders and others meet for informal exchanges of views on matters of especial interest to the Jewish community. Women often make up a majority of the attendance at these meetings. (No. 8 of a series) Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BH-NY-TFD-3-B-6-R-J)

Description:
Text transcribed from caption: A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A RABBI #1824 Among the post-war responsibilities of the synagogue is the reception - and care, if necessary - of discharged Jewish veterans. Rabbi David de Sola Pool of Shearith Israel Congregation in New York is shown greeting a soldier newly back from service in the China-Burma-India theater. Some Jewish servicemen have shown a desire to study for the rabbinate, and others have displayed greater interest in religion, as a result of their experiences overseas. Shearith Israel gave 163 young men to the army, navy and other services, as indicated by its service flag. Three were killed in active service. Description:
Text transcribed from caption: A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A RABBI #1823 Teaching Jewish ceremonies and customs is part of the regular curriculum of religious schools conducted by rabbis. Training of youth in moral principles is one of the most important duties of the rabbi. Rabbi David de Sola Pool, of Shearith Israel Congregation, New York, is shown facing a responsive audience as he expounds on teachings of the sacred Torah. The Hebrew inscription on the blackboard reads; “Say Little and Do Much” - a Talmudic injunction. Religious schools are held four times a week and on Sundays, and pupils range in age from 6 to 16. On his 13th birthday, a Jewish boy becomes a “Bar Mitzvah” (a son of the commandment), which binds him to perform the precepts of his religion. In this photo, Dr. David de Sola Pool, of Shearith Israel Synagogue, New York, is shown using an ediphone as he catches up with his mail, which ranges from 30 to 60 letters a day. In addition to his regular duties in the synagogue, the rabbi is often invited to serve on community committees and to lend his active support to educational and philanthropic enterprises. Description:
Text transcribed from caption: A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A RABBI #1802 A break in the day’s round of duties. Here Dr. David de Sola Pool, Rabbi of Shearith Israel, New York’s oldest Jewish congregation, relaxes over a cup of tea with Mrs. Pool after a busy morning. In addition to holding three synagogue services daily, visiting sick members of his community, teaching in the religious school, preparing sermons and handling correspondence, the rabbi must also find time for community activities of varied kinds. Often working seven days a week, from early morning until late at night, he welcomes the odd moments when he can recuperate his energy and strength.
