Augustin Cardinal Bea, president of the Vatican Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity, is shown as he delivered a message from Pope Paul VI: “For centuries we have lived like strangers, whereas a common Baptism made us all the children of God. May this day mark the beginning of a road which, with God’s help, lead us to the day when our Churches can be reunited.” The relic -- the skull of St. Andrew, the Greek diocese’s patron saint -- was returned following conversations between Pope Paul and Metropolitan Constantine of Patras in the Holy Land. Text transcribed from caption: C-31647 POPE RECEIVES GREEK ORTHODOX PRELATE VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI receives Vicar General Jeroteos Tsantilis of the Orthodox Diocese of Patras, Greece, who was one of three Greek prelates representing the diocese at ceremonies for the famed relic of St. Andrew. The Greek prelates came to the Vatican to escort -- in company with a Vatican delegation -- the relic on its flight to Patras. Return of the relic after more than 500 years in the grottoes of St. Peter’s Basilica, where it had been brought from Patras for safe-keeping during a Turkish invasion, was decided upon by the Pope as a gesture of “brotherly love.” On its arrival in Greece, the relic -- skull of the Apostle -- was handed to Metropolitan Constantine of Patras by Augustin Cardinal Bea, president of the Vatican Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity, who headed the Vatican delegation.
