Text transcribed from caption: PC-46107 CANTERBURY ATTENDS GRAHAM CRUSADE RIO DE JANEIRO -- On the platform of a Billy Graham crusade for the first time are the spiritual leader of the Anglican Communion and the world’s best known evangelist. Archbishop Michael Ramsey of Canterbury (second from left) joined Billy Graham on the opening night of Mr. Graham’s five-day crusade in Rio de Janeiro. At right is Pastor Nilson Fanini of Niteroi, the chairman of the crusade executive committee. Archbishop Ramsey, who was on a tour of South America, told the crowd he had come to Marcana Stadium “to speak to this great gathering of fellow Christians." He was introduced by Mr. Graham as a “friend for many years," and responded with a talk in which he said every Christian should be an evangelist. Description:
Text transcribed from caption: P-46103 CHILE BISHOP UNDER PRESSURE TO RESIGN SANTIAGO, Chile -- Pressure for the resignation and departure of Bishop Helmut Frenz of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chile has mounted in recent weeks within his own church. Opponents of the 41-year-old native German churchman have purchased space in newspapers to publish requests for his resignation and departure. The bishop -- in Chile for nine years and head of the 24,000-member, mainly German-background denomination since 1970 -- has been in conflict with conservative factions in the church for an extended period. Criticism has sharpened in the last year mainly because of his work on behalf of political refugees in Chile following the September 1973 military coup which toppled the Allende regime. In another development, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Sadruddin Aga Khan, announced that Bishop Frenz has been named to receive the 1974 Nansen Medal for outstanding service to refugees. Bishop Frenz took the lead in organizing a National Refugee Committee together with Roman Catholic, Protestant and other groups shortly after the September 1973 coup. Text transcribed from caption: CHRIST IN CONCRETE #C-2043 RIO DE JANEIRO -- Towering 2,300 feet above sea-level atop Corcovado Mountain is the majestic statue of Christ the Redeemer, which forms a cross 130 feet high, including the 30-foot pedestal. M. Paul Landowski, the sculptor, a member of the French Institute, required five years to complete this likeness of Christ in reinforced concrete. Distance between outstretched fingertips of world-embracing arms is 92 feet. Each pierced hand measured over 10 feet in length and weighs ten tons. The serene, well-poised head alone is 13½ feet high and scales 30 tons. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (PA-NY-JOG-3C-6-C)

Text transcribed from caption: OUR LADY OF MERCY IN LIMA #C-1345 LIMA, Peru -- The church of Our Lady of Mercy -- “Nuestra Senora de la Merced” -- is one of Peru’s oldest religious edifices. Its tower, belfry and facade were recently restored in their original style by the Peruvian government. The monks who built it, scions of Spanish aristocracy, are believed to have erected a hermitage in the Rimac Valley even before the founding of Lima, and they figured prominently in the city’s early history. In the cloistered garden of Our Lady is a fig tree which was planted more than 400 years ago by Friar Francisco Bobadella, one of the founders. Our Lady of Mercy is the patron saint of the Peruvian Army. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (HHS-TOR-CAN-MES-5D-6-C)
