Text transcribed from caption: C-31802 A CUE FROM SISTER BENEDICT PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Sister Benedict gives some pointers on playing billiards to guests at the Sacred Heart Home for the Aged in Phoenix. The nun is a member of the Little Sisters of the Poor who operate the residence. Donated by the Knights of Columbus, the pool table makes it possible for the home to incorporate billiards as part of its program to keep the senior citizens amused and occupied. Text transcribed from caption: C-32162 FAITHFUL WEARING OUT BELOVED PASTOR’S NOSE PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Parishioners of St. Mary’s church in Phoenix show their affection for a pioneering pastor of their parish by touching the nose of his likeness on this memorial plaque. Placed on an outside wall of the church, the marker honors Father Novatus Benzing, a Franciscan priest who served as pastor for 27 years. Born in 1869, Father Benzing came to the parish in 1896 and renovated the old church, later building a new one, and erected schools for Mexican and American children. The plaque notes that the church and schools are living monuments to the pastor and that parishioners of St. Mary’s “do not forget.” As a result of the constant touching of the nose, it has become considerably worn and shiny -- something like the famous toe of St. Peter’s statue at the Vatican. Text transcribed from caption: PC-30692 CLOSED CIRCUIT TV AIDS INSTRUCTION AT GIRLS' HOME PHEONIX, Ariz. -- As Mrs. Myrtle Kuykendall (top left) gives instructions, girls in each of 11 cottages at the Good Shepherd Home for Girls at Phoenix, Ariz., watch over a special closed circuit television system and prepare their meals. The TV system is the first of its kind to be installed in one of some 400 Good Shepheard Homes throughout the world. The homes, for the rehabilitation of girls, are operated by the Roman Catholic Sisters of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd. Designated GS-TV, Channel 4, the station can originate telecasts from 42 different locations in the school and on the campus, for athletic events as well as classroom work. Arthur Carroll, an engineer and technician who designed and built the system, gives an explanation of camera operation to Mother Mary Euphrasis, president of the school, (bottom, left). The channel also features programs by special speakers. The first of these was the Rev. Rex A. Sprink, Methodist clergyman in Phoenix, who gave four weekly half-hour talks. Text transcribed from caption: C-30689 SALUTE TO ST. PATRICK PHEONIX, Ariz. -- An Irishman never forgets, and most particularly -- not on St. Patrick's Day. John O'Riordan and family of Phoenix hoist an Irish flag alongside Old Glory in honor of St. Patrick. This Limerick-born son of the Ould Sod was born on the Saint's feast day. Mr. O'Riordan also flies the colors of Ireland on U.S. national holidays. "The Munster flag waving in front of my home," he says, "refers to the Southern Province which incorporates six counties of which Limerick, my county, was one. This flag shows crowns and denotes royalty reaching back into history." Mr. O'Riordan, who has lived in the U.S. since 1949, made his first return trip to Ireland last year, taking along his family. His native village of Abbeyfeale was unchanged, he said; it still sends a great number of its sons on to the priesthood. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (HU-PHE-3A-64-W)

Text transcribed from caption: P-30841 CALIFORNIA YOUNGSTERS AID PHOENIX CHURCH PHOENIX, Ariz. -- The Primera Iglesia Methodist Mexican church at Phoenix, Ariz., got a “new look”, thanks to the energy of 30 teenagers from North Ridge, Calif. The young people answered a call from the Rev. William Howard of the North Ridge Methodist church to use their Easter vacation by taking a bus-trip to the Phoenix church, which was badly in need of paint and other repairs. The young people raised money for the journey through spaghetti dinners and other fund-raising activities and spent a week in Phoenix not only renovating the Primera Iglesia church but, according to Mr. Howard, gaining experience in Christian fellowship and understanding. The California clergyman (at far right, upper left photo) directs paint-mixing chores, with Harold Gifford (standing, left), Methodist Youth Fellowship councilor from California, and the Rev. Mardoquero B. Garcia (standing, center), pastor of the Phoenix church. The visiting workers swarm all over the church, in bottom photo, and take a break from their labor, at upper right. Text transcribed from caption: C-30853 HOLY SATURDAY: BASKETS BLESSED PHOENIX, Ariz. -- “Blessing of the Baskets” on Holy Saturday. More than 100 Polish-American families in Phoenix, Ariz., participate in a blessing of Easter foods, a tradition centuries-old in Poland. Father Edward J. Wajda, assistant director of the Newman Center for Catholic students at Arizona State University, blessed the food at St. Agnes church. The baskets, carried by children and adults, held a variety of foods, some of them of Christian symbolism. Among them were pastry-made lambs; a relish of horseradish, vinegar and beets; decorated hard-boiled eggs. The custom was begun five years ago with the approval of Msgr. Robert J. Donohoe, pastor of St. Agnes parish. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (HFU-PHOE-4B-64-W)
