Text transcribed from caption: PAY DAY AT A CHINA MISSION #S-4947 HANGCHOW, China -- Chinese women who labor at the Northern Presbyterian Mission here teaching, cooking, cleaning and sewing made-over clothes for children, assemble for their wages. Because of the inflationary spiral in China they are not paid in currency but with rice which they live on and use as barter for other goods. Markings on the bags indicate that the rice is part of American relief shipments to the Orient. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (PA-NY-BS-1A-47-W)

Text transcribed from caption: CHRIST IN CONCRETE #C-2043 RIO DE JANEIRO -- Towering 2,300 feet above sea-level atop Corcovado Mountain is the majestic statue of Christ the Redeemer, which forms a cross 130 feet high, including the 30-foot pedestal. M. Paul Landowski, the sculptor, a member of the French Institute, required five years to complete this likeness of Christ in reinforced concrete. Distance between outstretched fingertips of world-embracing arms is 92 feet. Each pierced hand measured over 10 feet in length and weighs ten tons. The serene, well-poised head alone is 13½ feet high and scales 30 tons. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (PA-NY-JOG-3C-6-C)

Text transcribed from caption: RUINS STILL STAND AT MONTE CASSINO #C-1966 CASSINO, Italy -- Bombed to rubble by U.S. Army planes, the ruins of Monte Cassino Abbey stand as mute evidence of the destruction of war. Top photo shows the tomb of St. Benedict, founder of the Abbey, and of his twin sister, St. Scholastica, now housed in a temporary structure (center) surrounded by the piles of masonry. Except for a few cracks, the tomb is undamaged. In lower photo, Army trucks and civilian car roll down the steep hill leading from temporary quarters erected for the 80 Benedictine monks of the abbey. Bomb craters still dot the terrain.
