Description:
Text transcribed from caption: C-29946 WELCOME TO ROME ROME -- Stefan Cardinal Wyszinski, Primate of Poland, carries roses presented to him upon his arrival in Rome to participate in sessions of the Second Vatican Council. The cardinal, the highest-ranking prelate from a Communist country to attend the Council, headed a group of 25 Polish bishops. Some 35 other Polish prelates remained at home, not having received exit permits to attend the Council sessions. Cardinal Wyszinski, an outspoken critic of the Communist regime in Poland, recently delivered several sermons denouncing restrictions placed on the Church in his homeland. Description:
Text transcribed from caption: C-29915 POPE PROPOSES ROMAN CURIA REFORMS VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI gestures as he receives prelates and officials of the Roman Curia. In addressing them he proposed that the Church’s central administrative body be modernized for today’s age. Major reforms asked by the Pope included greater authority to diocesan bishops, who now must refer many matters to Rome; collaboration of bishops with the Pope in the “study and responsibility” of Church government; internationalization of Curia members, now predominantly Italian; and education of Curia personnel along more “ecumenical” lines. Coming a week before the opening of the Second Vatican Council’s second session, the Pope’s address to the Curia gave added significance to the first item on the Council’s agenda. This was entitled “Of the Church” and dealt mainly with relations between bishops and the Church in modern times. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-9D-63-NAB)

To his right (partly hidden by newsmen) is Sheikh Ahmed Hassan el-Bakoury, director general of the university. The Catholic prelate was on a five-day visit of Cairo as a guest of the government. He conferred with Grand Sheikh Hassan Mamoun, Islam’s supreme religious figure, marking the first time that a Prince of the Church had been received by the spiritual head of the Al Azhar University. Cardinal Koenig was reported to have assured the Grand Sheikh that the Vatican Council’s draft declaration on the Jews had no political implications and was purely religious in character.
