Text transcribed from caption: P-31805 JOHNSONS GIVE MONASTERY STONE TO TEXAS CHURCH FREDERICKSBURG, Tex. -- President Johnson uses trowel and mortar to seal a stone from the Cypriote monastery of St. Barnabas into the nave wall of the new St. Barnabas Episcopal church at Fredericksburg, Tex. The First Lady (left) also took part in the ceremony. President and Mrs. Johnson, making their first public appearance since the election, gave the stone to the church near their ranch where they frequently have worshipped. Text transcribed from caption: PC-32075 PRESIDENT TAKES OATH ON FAMILY BIBLE WASHINGTON, D.C. -- President Johnson, with one had resting on the family Bible held by his wife, takes his oath of office, administered by Chief Justice Earl Warren. Vice President Hubert Humphrey was sworn in minutes earlier by House Speaker John McCormack of Massachusetts. The Bible which Mrs. Johnson held had been given to the President’s family by his mother, Mrs. Rebekah Baines Johnson, 13 years ago when they moved to the LBJ ranch in Johnson City, Texas. Text transcribed from caption: PC-30390 CANDLELIGHT SERVICE FOR LATE PRESIDENT WASHINGTON, D.C. -- President Johnson, the First Lady and their daughter, Lucy Baines, hold lighted candles during memorial service at the Lincoln Memorial ending a 30-day period of official national mourning for the late John F. Kennedy. Thousands of other persons also held flickering candles at the service and heard the Chief Executive give a moving eulogy to the assassinated President Kennedy. Paraphrasing Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, Mr. Johnson said: “For let us here on this Christmas night determine that John Kennedy did not live or die in vain, that this nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom and that we may achieve in our time and for all time the ancient vision of peace on earth, good will toward all men.” President Johnson called on all Americans to use Christmas as a time of thanks-giving, hope and dedication. Sayre, Jr., of Washington Cathedral (Episcopal) as he arrives to attend a memorial service for the late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru of India. Some 2,000 dignitaries and guests attended the service, conducted by Dean Sayre. Nearly half of the worshippers were Indians. Dean Sayre eulogized the Indian leader as a man “who believed in a moral order that stands above man’s laws.” Mr. Nehru served as Prime Minister from 1947 when India became independent from Great Britain until his death.
