About this Collection

Conceived by journalist Louis Minsky (1909-1957), Religious News Service (RNS) was established in 1934 as an affiliated but independently managed agency of the National Conference of Jews and Christians (later the National Conference of Christians and Jews), and was dedicated to providing authoritative and bias-free news about religion and ethics to both the secular and religious press. This collection contains photographs documenting Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox, and Jewish groups. Coverage of Protestants (especially mainline Protestants) and Catholics constitutes the bulk of the images. View the collection guide to learn more. Digitization of some of the images in this collection made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Text transcribed from caption: MINISTERS PICKET WHITE HOUSE #S-4663 WASHINGTON -- Thirty-six ministers from various Protestant denominations formed a picket line on Pennsylvania Ave. in front of the White House to protest the continued imprisonment of 1,200 conscientious objectors. The pickets, representing the Committee for Amnesty, paraded quietly, bearing placards that read “Jail for Conscience Denies Religious Freedom” and “Free U.S. Religious Prisoners” while separate delegations of clergymen brought the issue in person to Attorney General Tom C. Clark and David K. Niles, administrative assistant to President Truman. Other groups visited Capitol Hill to present their plea to members of Congress. Text transcribed from caption: CONGRESS BEGINS WITH PRAYER #4973 WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Dr. James Shera Montgomery, chaplain of the House of Representatives, begins the 80th session of the lower house by leading the Representatives in prayer. Though House rules provide that a new chaplain may be selected every two years, Dr. Montgomery has filled the post for the past 26 years largely because, observers say, he is a favorite with both political parties. As chaplain, he is called on to begin each House session with prayer. Other duties include: marrying Congressmen and members of their families, baptizing their children, and officiating at government ceremonies. Robert J. White, dean of the School of Law, Catholic University of America, takes the oath which henceforth distinguishes him as the first commodore chaplain in the history of the American Navy. The precedent-setting ceremony took place in the office of Rear Admiral William N. Thomas (left), USN, who administered the oath in the presence of a number of Navy officials, Congressmen and high government officials. Former national chaplain of the American Legion and vice-president, 1934-36, of FIDAC, a world organization of World War I veterans, Father White was nominated for the commission by President Truman. From left are: Roy Wilkins, executive secretary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; Floyd B.
