About this Collection

Conceived by journalist Louis Minsky (1909-1957), Religious News Service (RNS) was established in 1934 as an affiliated but independently managed agency of the National Conference of Jews and Christians (later the National Conference of Christians and Jews), and was dedicated to providing authoritative and bias-free news about religion and ethics to both the secular and religious press. This collection contains photographs documenting Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox, and Jewish groups. Coverage of Protestants (especially mainline Protestants) and Catholics constitutes the bulk of the images. View the collection guide to learn more. Text transcribed from caption: P-31738 NCCJ EXAMINES RESPONSIBILITIES IN CHANGING TIMES PHILADELPHIA -- Some 130 officials of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, concerned with responsibility for the public order, met in Philadelphia to discuss the civil rights struggle, the urban crisis and the interreligious situation. Shown at a luncheon held in connection with a national staff meeting are from left: Dr. Lewis Webster Jones, president of the NCCJ; and Philip Scharper, editor-in-chief of Sheed & Ward publishing house in New York, who spoke on the religious relevance to the temporal order. Text transcribed from caption: PC-31124 PHILADELPHIA RELIGIOUS LEADERS ACT ON RACE PHILADELPHIA- Protestant and Roman Catholic bishops make public the first interreligious statement on racial justice and religious harmony ever issued in Philadelphia. Shown left to right are Methodist Bishop Fred Pierce Corson of Philadelphia, head of the World Methodist Council; Catholic Archbishop John J. Krol of Philadelphia; and Protestant Episcopal Bishop Robert L. DeWitt of Pennsylvania. The joint statement was also signed by local Baptist, Lutheran, Quaker, United Presbyterian, United Church of Christ, and Jewish leaders. For the first time in this city, many of them attended a Mass offered for racial and religious harmony by Archbishop Krol in the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul. Text transcribed from caption: PC-31068 RELIGIOUS GROUPS SUPPORT CIVIL RIGHTS PHILADELPHIA-Representatives of church groups demonstrate for racial justice at an “interreligious witness for civil rights” in Philadelphia’s Independence Hall Square. The meeting was attended by several hundred persons from about 25 cooperating religious groups. Aim of the demonstration was an early passage of the civil rights bill in Congress.
