Herbert Fitzpatrick (right) of the First Baptist Church, Riverdale, Md., and Vaughn Barkdoll of the American Christian Heritage Association of Greenbelt, Md., dedicate a Nativity Scene near the Ellipse in Washington. Located adjacent to the annual Pageant of Peace display, the Nativity Scene was the subject of a suit a year ago. Sponsored by the National Park Service, the suit resulted in a court decision banning the manger scene, citing “excessive government entanglement with religion.” The Nativity Scene was erected by the American Christian Heritage Association, which sponsored it last year. This year they were given a permit by the park service. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (RN-WAS-12C-74-DS)

Text transcribed from caption: J-46210 FATHER DRINAN: ZIONISM EXPRESSES RELIGIOUS BELIEFS WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Zionism is “more than a political movement; it is an expression of worldwide Jewish religious beliefs and hopes,” Rep. Robert F. Drinan (D-Mass.) said in remarks made before the national executive committee of the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith. “Zionism is a profoundly held spiritual conviction of Jewish fidelity to the biblical covenant which links a people, a faith and a land in a unique religious and mystical unity,” the Roman Catholic Jesuit priest-congressman stated in a speech which was inserted into the Congressional Record. It is “not for a Christian to state,” he added, “whether or not Zionism and Judaism are theologically separable. But politically they cannot be separated. Zionism is the mystique, the ‘elan vital’ of Israel. To equate Zionism with racism represents a frontal assault against the core values of Judaism.” In the light of recent public statements concerning the alleged influence of Jews in this country who are staunch supporters of Israel, it is time, Father Drinan said, “as never before,” for Americans, “especially Christian Americans,” to “reassess the fundamental reasons why the United States has a unique and profound alliance with Israel.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (R-8A-76-DS)

Text transcribed from caption: PC-45879 INSTANT REPLAY PERFECTS PREACHING WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Father John Burke of the U.S. Army Chaplain Board, Fort Meade, Md., uses a cassette tape recorder to critique sermons submitted by Army chaplains. Father Burke, a Roman Catholic Dominican priest who is executive director of the Word of God Institute in Washington, serves as the resource consultant of a new project of the Army’s Chaplain Board called Preaching Exchange. The Exchange offers each participating chaplain a sermon critique through the medium of cassette tape. Chaplains throughout the Army are able to tape record one of their sermons, send it to the Exchange, and receive immediate and valuable feedback on their preaching. Father Burke audits the sermons and, on the “flip-side” of the cassette tape, provides each chaplain with a critique based upon theological, homiletical and communication guidelines. The Exchange is a direct result of efforts by the Chief of Army Chaplains, Chaplain (Maj. Gen.) Gerhardt W. Hyatt, who believes that “every chaplain in the Army, no matter what his age, should be developing his preaching talent.” His emphasis has led to a renewal of interest in preaching among Army chaplains as evidenced in preaching clinics, workshops, conferences and programs of continuing education.
