Miss Replogle and 17 fellow parishioners of the Main Street Baptist Church of Jacksonville were travelling from Jerusalem to Jericho when the grenade hit the bus at the ruins of Bethany. Shrapnel struck Miss Replogle in the leg and she was rushed to Jerusalem where she underwent surgery. In Beirut, the Palestine Liberation Organization took responsibility for the attack and warned foreigners “not to go to occupied Palestine as we are not responsible if they get hurt during the escalation of commando activity against the Israeli enemy.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (B-Jer-12D-74-DS)

Referring to the case of Syrian-born Archbishop Ilarion Capucci, the Patriarchal Vicar of the Melkite Church in East Jerusalem who went on trial Sept. 20, Patriarch Hakim said: "We should not be too quick to condemn him, despite propaganda to the contrary. He has taken risks to direct attention of the world to the rights of the Arabs, at least in Jerusalem and the territories occupied (by the Israelis) since the war of 1967." Text transcribed from caption: CJ-46048 ARCHBISHOP GOES ON TRIAL JERUSALEM -- Melkite Catholic Archbishop Ilarion Capucci talks with newsmen in Jerusalem after the first day of his trial on charges of smuggling arms and explosives from Lebanon to Palestinian guerrillas in the Israeli-occupied West Bank (of Jordan). After the bill of indictment was read, the 52-year-old Syrian-born prelate, who represents Melkite Patriarch Maximos V. Hakim in Jerusalem, was asked to respond to the charges and enter a plea of guilty or not guilty. Before allowing his client to reply, defense attorney Azeez Shehadeh, a Christian Arab, submitted two preliminary claims, which, if accepted by the court, would lead to a dismissal of all charges. Mr. Shehadeh claimed that Israel had no legal jurisdiction in East Jerusalem which is occupied territory, and that Archbishop Capucci, as a possessor of a Vatican passport and an Israeli Foreign Ministry service visa, enjoyed diplomatic immunity. The court recessed for several days to rule on the challenge. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (A-JER-9D-74-DS)

Police said that the 52-year-old prelate, who was born and raised in Syria, had been acting as an undercover liaison man and gunrunner between Al Fatah guerrilla headquarters in Beirut, Lebanon, and guerrillas operating in the Judea and Samaria regions of the occupied West Bank of Jordan and in the Jerusalem region. According to Chief Superintendent Nahum Bosmi, large quantities of weapons and explosives had been found hidden in the archbishop’s Mercedes sedan earlier in August after he had returned from a visit to Lebanon.
