Ghana -- The University of Ghana was the site for the first meeting of the
World Council of Churches Faith and Order Commission in Africa. Leaders
present included (left to right): Canon Burgess Carr, general secretary of
the All-Africa Conference of Churches; Father John Meyendorff, chairman of
the Commission and a theologian of the Orthodox Church in America; Col. I.K.
Acheampong, Ghana’s head of state and a Roman Catholic layman; Dr. Lukas
Vischer, director of the WCC Faith and Order Secretariat, and Dr. J. Robert
Nelson, chairman of the Faith and Order Working Committee and dean of the
Boston University School of Theology. The Faith and Order Commission, which
includes Roman Catholic members as well as representatives from the
Council’s Protestant and Orthodox communion, is a major component of the
