Text transcribed from caption: C-45930 NAWR MEETING ST. LOUIS -- At top,
Cardinal John Carberry of St. Louis welcomes Sister Catherine Pinkerton,
C.S.J., chairperson of the National Assembly of Women Religious, to St. Louis
University, which hosted the organization’s 4th annual convention. Looking
on is Sister Helen Butler, O.P., president of the Sisters’ Senate of the
Brooklyn diocese. Below, Sister Mary Jo O’Connor, D.W. (left), community
health nurse for the Brooklyn Catholic Charities Office for the Aging,
congratulates Sister Kathryn Sullivan, RSCJ, a Scripture scholar and author,
after he keynote address to the convention. The more than 600 nuns taking
part in the NAWR meeting overwhelmingly approved the recent ordination of 11
women to the Episcopal priesthood and sent a telegram to the Chicago meeting
of the Episcopal House of Bishops -- which later declared the ordinations
“invalid” -- urging them “to affirm and recognize” the ordinations.
The participants also agreed to take part in a symbolic fast of bread and
water to bring attention to the issue of world hunger and the threat of
famine in many regions. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO
