Text transcribed from caption: C-3812 PRIEST-HORTICULTURIST PITTSBURGH -- On what once was 33 rolling acres of farmland, the Rev. Joseph V. Skripkus trims one of the 14,000 trees and shrubs he has planted on the grounds of St. Francis Convent and Academy at South Hills near here. The farmland has been converted into a virtual park, with trees flanking the walks and pines acting as windbreakers during the winter. Although much of the land has been planted as lawn, seven acres have been reserved by Father Skripkus for vegetable garden on which food is grown for the school cafeteria. His 500 fruit trees supply the 300 students with fresh fruit. In addition to his landscaping, Father Joe, as he is known to the thousands of girls who have graduated from the academy since 1926, has grafted and crossed plants, creating several new varieties of fruit trees and plants. He has an apple tree that produces six different kinds of apples, one pear tree that bears five varieties, and a plum tree with two.
