Text transcribed from caption: PC-45879 INSTANT REPLAY PERFECTS PREACHING WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Father John Burke of the U.S. Army Chaplain Board, Fort Meade, Md., uses a cassette tape recorder to critique sermons submitted by Army chaplains. Father Burke, a Roman Catholic Dominican priest who is executive director of the Word of God Institute in Washington, serves as the resource consultant of a new project of the Army’s Chaplain Board called Preaching Exchange. The Exchange offers each participating chaplain a sermon critique through the medium of cassette tape. Chaplains throughout the Army are able to tape record one of their sermons, send it to the Exchange, and receive immediate and valuable feedback on their preaching. Father Burke audits the sermons and, on the “flip-side” of the cassette tape, provides each chaplain with a critique based upon theological, homiletical and communication guidelines. The Exchange is a direct result of efforts by the Chief of Army Chaplains, Chaplain (Maj. Gen.) Gerhardt W. Hyatt, who believes that “every chaplain in the Army, no matter what his age, should be developing his preaching talent.” His emphasis has led to a renewal of interest in preaching among Army chaplains as evidenced in preaching clinics, workshops, conferences and programs of continuing education. Peter and Paul. The procession began at Philadelphia’s City Hall and ended at the Art Museum where speakers dealt with the theme of reconciliation. Text transcribed from caption: C-45907 PROUD PARENTS NASHVILLE -- Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Dean are joined by their son, Father Edwin Dean, Jr., as they look over a newspaper account of his recent ordination to the priesthood at their Nashville home. Father Dean, the first black Tennessean to become a Catholic priest, was brought up as a Baptist and attended the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, affiliated with the National Baptist Convention, U.S.A., Inc. with his parents until he was 12, when he made the decision to become a Catholic. Mrs. Dean said that she and her husband had no objection to their son’s becoming a priest. “The whole family attended his ordination service, along with almost all the congregation of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.” She said her son first expressed an interest in the Catholic Church at the age of four. He attended St. Vincent de Paul School, in the parish he now serves as assistant pastor, from the second grade on and was baptized a Catholic at age 13. Text transcribed from caption: C-45863 DEPORTATION HEARING FOR MARYKNOLL PRIEST MARYKNOLL, N.Y. -- Father Edward M. Gerlock, M.M. (right, top photo) a Maryknoll missionary from Binghampton, N.Y., appears at a deportation hearing in the Philippines with his chief counsel, Lorenzo M. Tanada, a former Senator in the Philippine National Congress. Below, documents are marked during the hearings as spectators look on. At the table, from left to right, are: Mr. Tanada, Father Gerlock, a deportation board clerk and a Philippine National Constabulary officer called as a witness. Maryknoll Bishop Joseph W. Regan, M.M., of Tagum stands at far right. Father Gerlock, arrested by the government at Tagum on the island of Mindanao last October, is still awaiting a ruling by the deportation board although the hearing on his case began in December 1973. Charged with being critical of Filipino martial law, he is free to “come and go” within the city of Manila but is still in a kind of “limbo” so far as his future is concerned. One of three Maryknollers arrested in October 1973 and slated for deportation, the veteran of 12 years’ service in the Philippines decided to plead “not guilty” to charges and demand a hearing. Text transcribed from caption: C-45700 CENTER OF ATTRACTION SAGINAW, Mich. -- Father Bartholomew Kestell and his puppet, “Father Oscar,” entertain a group of youngsters at St. Joseph School in Saginaw, Mich. The Capuchin priest was in the Midwest for a brief vacation following his second four-year mission stint on the Persian Gulf sheikdom of Bahrain Island. A man in perpetual motion who is sometimes called “The Brown Tornado” (for his brown robe) by fellow priests, Father Barth, a native of New Holstein, Wisc., is widely known in Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan for his wide range of talents. He is an architect, an archaeologist, a puppeteer, a historian and a former Navy chaplain. When Father Barth returns to the Mid-East, he will begin construction on the first Catholic church in Oman, another Persian Gulf sheikdom, in more than 300 years. The church will reflect Arabic architecture because, as Father Barth explains, 50 years from now it might serve as a mosque. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BFS-SAG-6C-74-DS)

Text transcribed from caption: C-45698 HAPPY DAY FOR EIGHT YOUNGSTERS NEW YORK -- While Confirmation is normally not an unusual sacrament, it is for a group of eight students -- all of them brain-damaged or emotionally disturbed children -- as they are confirmed by Auxiliary Bishop Patrick Ahern of New York during a ceremony in St. Eugene’s Chapel of Sacred Heart Church in the Bronx. The youngsters are children at the Murray Hill Classes, a nonsectarian private school for children who have been excluded from public school because of the severity of their illnesses. The school rents the chapel from Sacred Heart Parish and uses it as a classroom building. Father Joseph Gleeson (right), associate pastor at the parish, is a volunteer teacher in the school’s released time religious education program. It was he who prepared the youngsters for Confirmation. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (CS-NY-6C-74-DS)
