Description:
Text transcribed from caption: RABBINICAL COUNCIL DECIDES MARITAL STATUS #j-3006 BUDAPEST -- The persecution and death of millions of Jews in Europe during the Nazi regime has resulted in the breakup of their families and subsequent bewilderment on the part of many as to their exact marital status. This has been further complicated by the lack of evidence of death, necessitating relaxation of the usual laws. To cope with the problem, the Rabbinical Council of the Central Bureau of Hungarian Orthodox Jewry has set up a special court to rule on cases of remarriage for all Eastern Europe. Here the court is considering the cases of two women (left) whose husbands have disappeared. Seated at the table are (left to right): Rabbi Paneth, secretary of the court; Rabbi Jacob Lebovitsch; Rabbi M. Cohn; Rabbi Welz, and Rabbi Usher Babad. Text transcribed from caption: HUNGARIAN BISHOP BEHIND BARS #c-2076 BUDAPEST -- Imprisoned here as a “war criminal” Bishop Stefan Uzdoczy-Zadravetz (shown behind prison bars) has long been noted for his strong anti-Communistic attitude. He was “Army Bishop” of Admiral Nicholas Horthy’s forces after the last war. Although the bishop has been in retirement since 1928, most of the material for the accusations against him was gathered from his speeches and activities during World War I and in the “counter-revolutionary” period following it when Horthy’s regime superceded [sic] that of the Bolshevik Bela Kun. The 62-year-old prelate lives in a room with 30 other prisoners. Three times weekly he celebrates Mass in the prison chapel. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (EZ-BUDA-MES-3C-6-C)

The Peoples Party, only legal Catholic party in Hungary, recently named two delegates to the parliament. They were elected, however, on the Small Holders Party as the government did not give permission for the Peoples Party to organize in time to prepare its own ticket. The monks are (left to right), Fathers Gilbert, Navay and Denes. Second man in rear is Reuben H. Markham, American newspaper correspondent. Description:
Text transcribed from caption: C-31769 HUNGARIAN BISHOPS CONSECRATED BUDAPEST -- An unprecedented ceremony in the Catholic Church of Hungary. Five bishops are consecrated at once in St. Stephen’s Basilica, Budapest, by Archbishop Endre Hamvas of Kalocsa. Appointment of the bishops and their designation as administrators of long-vacant bishoprics followed the “limited” agreement between the Vatican and Hungary’s Communist regime. The bishops can be identified here by the kerchiefs they wear. Left to right, they are Auxiliary Bishop Pal Brezanoczy of Eger, standing and partly obscured by priest; Auxiliary Bishop Jozsef Cserhati of Pecs; Bishop Jozsef Iljias of Csanad; Auxiliary Bishop Jozsef Winkler of Szombathely; and Auxiliary Bishop Jozsef Banic of Gyor. Bishop Winkler had already been raised to the episcopacy by Pope John XXIII but conditions in Hungary had prevented his consecration. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-10E-64-W)

Text transcribed from caption: C-30845 KHRUSHCHEV AND CLERGYMAN BUDAPEST -- A rare picture: Nikita Khrushchev (back to camera, left) shakes hands with an unidentified clergyman, described only as “a priest,” at a reception in Budapest. At right is Hungarian Premier Janos Kadar. The picture was taken at a time when the USSR had accelerated its atheistic indoctrination program and the Hungarian Communist regime’s relations with the Roman Catholic Church were reported somewhat improved. The Soviet Premier’s visit, marked by his most outspoken attack on Red Chinese militarism, was notable for many rumors, among them one which foresaw withdrawal of remaining Russian forces from Hungary. It also spurred renewed reports that Joszef Cardinal Mindszenty would be permitted by the regime to leave the U.S. legation at Budapest, where he has taken refuge since the abortive Freedom Fighters’ revolt of 1956.
