The Rt. Rev. Bravid W. Harris, bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church’s
Missionary District of Liberia, West Africa, (shown above) conferred here
with Presiding Bishop Henry St. George Tucker at Church headquarters. The
Episcopal Church has 3,052 communicants and about 2,500 church school pupils
and numerically it is the largest church in Liberia. Bishop Harris, whose
control extends over 57 churches and mission stations, said he was fortunate
to visit the establishments even twice a year, owing to transportation
difficulties in the 45,000 sq. mile country. “Along the coast I travel by
surf-boat, a kind of sailing vessel which, of course, depends on the winds.
It takes three days at best to travel 60 miles,” he said. “Travel to the
interior, by river, is accomplished by dug-out canoe.” The Bishop went to
West Africa last October. A native of Warrenton, N.C., he was rector of the
Grace Episcopal Church, Norfolk, Va., for 19 years when he joined the
Church’s National Council here as educational secretary for its Negro work.
He plans to return to Liberia in two months. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS
