Text transcribed from caption: PC-45099 'OLD NORTH' ANNIVERSARY IS ECUMENICAL BOSTON -- Leaders of Boston's Roman Catholic, Protestant and Jewish communities, along with public officials, joined in a unique "Ecumenical Service of Thanksgiving" commemorating the 250th anniversary of Boston's historic Christ church, popularly known as "Old North." Participants included (left to right) retired Episcopal Bishop Frederic C. Lawrence, Roman Catholic Cardinal Humberto Medeiros of Boston, Bishop John W. Burgess of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts, the Rev. Robert W. Golledge, Vicar of Old North, and Presiding Bishop John E. Hines of the Episcopal Church. The theme of the service was Old North's "Years of Freedom, Years of God," and it launched the church's observance of the national bicentennial. It was in Christ Church's slender steeple that Paul Revere sighted the lanterns that warned of the approach of British redcoats on April 18, 1775. During the service, Cardinal Medeiros read a cable from Cardinal Jan Willebrands, head of the Vatican's Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity, expressing Pope Paul's best wishes and blessings to those present, as well as his thanks to the cardinal for participating in the ecumenical service. Text transcribed from caption: PC-45073 REPORT ON INTERFAITH MISSION TO ISRAEL BOSTON -- Three religious leaders representing the Christian and Jewish faiths report on their 10-day study mission to Israel at a Boston news conference. Dr. Gene E. Bartlett, Father Robert W. Bullock and Rabbi Murray I. Rothman (left to right) participated in the first greater Boston ecumenical mission sponsored by three local groups -- the Interfaith Committee of the Jewish Community Council of Metropolitan Boston, National Conference of Christians and Jews, and the Catholic-Jewish Committee of the Archdiocesan Ecumenical Commission. Dr. Bartlett, pastor of the First Baptist church in Newton, Mass., is president of the American Baptist Churches in the U.S.A. Father Bullock serves as director of Campus Ministry of the Archdiocese of Boston and is Catholic chaplain at Brandeis University. Rabbi Rothman chairs the Jewish Community Council's Interfaith Committee and is spiritual leader of Temple Shalom in Newton. During their intensive tour, the participants lived on a kibbutz, met with Jewish and Arab officials and private citizens, and worshipped together at Christian and Jewish holy places. The group was comprised of ten Protestant, nine Catholic and four Jewish leaders. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (CB-BOS-1A-74-DS)

Fifteen students were arrested after a hallway scuffle between black and white students. The school was then ordered closed for the day. Sporadic violence has erupted at Hyde Park since school opened in September under the controversial court-ordered busing plan. The school was closed in the Fall but an uneasy truce had existed between white and black students since before Christmas. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (AA-BOS-1C-75-DS)

Edelin (right), a Boston City Hospital physician charged with manslaughter in the death of an aborted fetus, looks on as his attorney, William Homans, talks with reporters outside Suffolk Superior Court in Boston where his trial is taking place. Dr. Edelin is charged with manslaughter for allegedly assaulting and killing a fetus 24 to 28 weeks old. The case could produce a potential landmark decision on the viability of a fetus and when it becomes entitled to legal protection, a key issue left unresolved in the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1973 decision. The Supreme Court ruled that state governments can forbit only abortions “subsequent to viability.” However, it would only state “viability is usually placed at about seven months (28 weeks), but may occur earlier, even at 24 weeks.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (B-BOS-1B-75-DS)

Text transcribed from caption: PC-46174 TWO VIEWS OF BUSING BOSTON -- Students at Boston’s Hyde Park High School (top photo) look through a shattered window of their school bus, damaged when fights broke out between black and white students at the school. Several students were injured in the incident, just part of the violence which has marred Boston’s court-ordered busing plan since the start of the school year. A more peaceful view of busing is achieved by four Boston students as they discuss school desegregation efforts with a Charlotte, N.C., student coordinating council (bottom photo). The four students (foreground left to right), Barbara Steer, Dana Gonsal, Bob Messina and Linda Lawrence, are members of the Hyde Park High School biracial committee who were invited to the Southern City by students to get a look at integration and how it works in Charlotte’s public high schools, where a massive busing program has been in effect for 10 years. “We’re still working at it every day, and we don’t have any miracle answers," a Charlotte student told the Boston group. “But what was a new situation for us 10 years ago is a new situation for you now. And we want you to know we’ve learned a lot about judging anybody, black or white, as an individual. It just took time." Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (B-BOS/NC-10D-74-DS)

Mr. Jean-Louis, a black man from the French West Indies, was driving his car through South Boston when he was caught in a traffic jam. A mob of whites surrounded his car and began pounding on the car body and windshield. He jumped out and tried to run but was caught by the mob at the front porch of a house. Before police could rescue him, Mr. Jean-Louis suffered head injuries. He was later treated at a hospital and released. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (A-BOS-10B-74-DS)
