Text transcribed from caption: PC-46157 (Suggested for use with RNS WEEK IN RELIGION for Oct. 25, 1974) AFTER THE COUP SANTIAGO, Chile -- Armed riot police stand in front of the fire and rocket damaged Presidential Palace in Santiago in late September 1973 after the military coup which toppled the government of President Salvador Allende. Revelations in the U.S. Congress about the "destabilizing" activities of the CIA in Chile prior to the overthrow of the Allende government have caused elements within the international religious community to re-focus attention on the human rights situation there. While some religious spokesmen, both within and outside Chile, have defended the authoritarian rule of the military junta which accomplished the coup, the weight of religious reaction has become highly critical of the junta. Torture and ill treatment of political prisoners -- estimated at about 8,ooo by government figures -- are charges most often heard. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (B-SAN-10C-74-DS)

On the last day of the crusade, 225,000 persons filled Maracana, the world's largest stadium (bottom) for what the evangelist described as the largest crowd ever to attend an evangelistic meeting in either North or South America. In addition, there was an unprecedented nationwide television audience. The service was the first evangelistic meeting ever telecast "live" on a Brazilian network. Archbishop Michael Ramsey of Canterbury (second from left) joined Billy Graham on the opening night of Mr. Graham’s five-day crusade in Rio de Janeiro. At right is Pastor Nilson Fanini of Niteroi, the chairman of the crusade executive committee. Archbishop Ramsey, who was on a tour of South America, told the crowd he had come to Marcana Stadium “to speak to this great gathering of fellow Christians." He was introduced by Mr. Graham as a “friend for many years," and responded with a talk in which he said every Christian should be an evangelist. Text transcribed from caption: PC-46086 LATIN METHODIST: SYNOD OF MAJOR INTEREST LA PAZ, Bolivia -- The Methodist Bishop of Bolivia is following the proceedings of the World Synod of Roman Catholic Bishops in Rome with more than cursory interest because the Synod's theme of evangelization "is especially significant for Latin America." “In reality," said Bishop Mortimer Arias, "this is an ecumenical search, because all of us, Roman Catholics and Protestants, are searching for an effective theology of evangelization of man in Latin America -- a theology that will liberate, humanize and conscientize Christians." The 50-year-old bishop said he hopes the Synod will "come to grips” with the theology of liberation, the theology developed in Latin America which seeks to penetrate the controversial area where the Gospel is applied to questions of social justice. Text transcribed from caption: P-46103 CHILE BISHOP UNDER PRESSURE TO RESIGN SANTIAGO, Chile -- Pressure for the resignation and departure of Bishop Helmut Frenz of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chile has mounted in recent weeks within his own church. Opponents of the 41-year-old native German churchman have purchased space in newspapers to publish requests for his resignation and departure. The bishop -- in Chile for nine years and head of the 24,000-member, mainly German-background denomination since 1970 -- has been in conflict with conservative factions in the church for an extended period. Criticism has sharpened in the last year mainly because of his work on behalf of political refugees in Chile following the September 1973 military coup which toppled the Allende regime. In another development, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Sadruddin Aga Khan, announced that Bishop Frenz has been named to receive the 1974 Nansen Medal for outstanding service to refugees. Bishop Frenz took the lead in organizing a National Refugee Committee together with Roman Catholic, Protestant and other groups shortly after the September 1973 coup. Text transcribed from caption: C-46104 PASTOR AND SOCCER STAR LA PAZ, Bolivia -- Jorge Jaime Jimenez, better known throughout Bolivia as "Jota Jota" (J.J. ), is the center-halfback for The Strongest, La Paz's perennial championship soccer team. But most of the thousands of fans who cheer the All-Bolivia football player on Sunday afternoons do not know that during the week the Catholic layman is "pastor" of San Jose Obrero Parish. For eight years the hill-side parish on the outskirts of La Paz had been administered by diocesan missionary priests from Rochester, N.Y., but the priests left Bolivia in August, turning over the parish to a team of lay people with Jimenez in charge as "coordinator." The 29-year-old Jimenez heads an eight-member parish council which has full responsibility for the spiritual and social action programs of the parish. Like any pastor of a Catholic parish, "J.J." has final authority on all parish questions, but shares this authority with the parish council. A bachelor, Jimenez is well qualified for his job. He completed his theology studies at the diocesan seminary in Cochabamba but was never ordained. At top, pastor Jimenez (left) talks things over with Dr. Jaime Rodrigues, a member of the parish council, in front of San Jose Obrero Church. Below, jubilant soccer fans in La Paz's National Stadium give a victory ride to the members of The Strongest soccer team, including "J.J." (right), after the team won the national championship in September. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (LP-LIM-1OB-74-DS)
