Sister Mary Madeleva, president of St. Mary’s College, South Bend, Ind.,
from 1934 to 1961 and noted educator, author and poet, died in New England
Baptist Hospital, Boston at 77. During her 27 years as head of St. Mary’s
located on the Notre Dame University campus, the nun spearheaded growth of
the school from a small girls’ college to a modern institution with more
than 1,000 students. Among her achievements was the establishment of the
Graduate School of Sacred Theology in 1944, first of its kind for women.
Sister Madeleva wrote 70 books of essays and poetry, lectured extensively and
wrote many articles for national magazine. In 1959, she wrote her
autobiography, “My First 70 Years.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS
