Text transcribed from caption: PC-46516 SOLZHENITSYN TALKS RELIGION WITH GRAHAM STOCKHOLM -- Exiled Soviet author Alexander Solzhenitsyn (left) and American evangelist Billy Graham discuss world religious trends during a meeting in Stockholm. Mr. Solzhenitsyn was in Stockholm to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature he was awarded four years ago. After the discussion, Mr. Graham said: “Solzhenitsyn has the kind of intellect and moral courage that the world so desperately needs today. His grasp of both history and theology is amazing.” The evangelist was on the first stop of a trip to several European countries in which he planned to visit with religious leaders, including the new Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Donald Coggan. Text transcribed from caption: PC-46268 KEEPING FIT HAMPTON, Va. -- Evangelist Billy Graham (left) and his music director, Cliff Barrows, relax on a dock near the Hampton Roads Coliseum, catching their breath following a short run. The two men had broken away from the routine of readying for Mr. Graham’s recent Tidewater Crusade to get some exercise. “I run practically ever day,” the evangelist said as he patted the rock-hard muscles of his leg. The running has also taken off inches from his waist -- four to be exact. Mr. Graham commented that he used to run a mile and a half each day. But following a slight heart disorder a couple of years ago -- blockage of a nerve bundle to the right of his heart -- doctors told him to cut back slightly on the exercise. “I’ll run now, I guess, about a quarter of a mile to a half mile per day.” He added that he also swims whenever he can. Mr. Graham, who is 56, said that at one time, he played golf a great deal -- with an average running score in the low 80s -- but he hardly plays anymore. “It got so it takes so long to play, and it’s so expensive. So, I just run now. It doesn’t cost me anything and I can do it anytime that I’ve got the time.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (EB-VA-11C-74-DS)

Text transcribed from caption: P-46288 TRIBUTE TO GRADY WILSON SWEETWATER, Texas -- Some 2,000 persons gathered under a circus tent on a remote and windswept West Texas hill near Sweetwater to honor evangelist Grady Wilson. The two-day event, which brought people from all over the U.S., was full of surprises for Mr. Wilson, who thought he had come to the Sweetwater area to hunt deer -- but instead found a Texas-size “Grady Wilson Day.” At top, Mr. Wilson chats with his boss, Billy Graham, and evangelist Billie Hanks, Jr. (left to right), during the tribute. Mr. Wilson is vice president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and has spent 25 years with the Graham team. Mr. Hanks, president of the Ft. Worth-based International Evangelism Association, organized “Grady Wilson Day” in honor of the man who has shepherded him in a “teacher-pupil relationship” for the past 20 years. All three men are Southern Baptists. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO by Don Blakly (DB-TEX-11D-74-DS)

Thanks to an unusual communications hook-up, used for the first time during a United States Graham crusade, Mr. Graham was able to preach in Hampton and be seen and heard in Norfolk. He alternated between the two cities during the 10 days of the crusade, thus preaching to two audiences at the same time. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (EB-VA-11A-74-DS)

On the last day of the crusade, 225,000 persons filled Maracana, the world's largest stadium (bottom) for what the evangelist described as the largest crowd ever to attend an evangelistic meeting in either North or South America. In addition, there was an unprecedented nationwide television audience. The service was the first evangelistic meeting ever telecast "live" on a Brazilian network. Archbishop Ramsey, who was on a tour of South America, told the crowd he had come to Marcana Stadium “to speak to this great gathering of fellow Christians." Jack Dain of Sydney, Australia, left, and evangelist Billy Graham sign the “Lausanne Covenant” at the closing ceremony of the International Congress on World Evangelization in Lausanne, Switzerland, of which they were executive and honorary chairman, respectively. Three hours after the congress was adjourned, some 1,972 participants had joined them in endorsing the pledge “to pray, to plan, and to work together for the evangelization of the whole world.” The covenant also declared that evangelism and socio-political involvement are both Christian responsibilities, and said that a reduction in foreign missionaries and money in an evangelized country may sometimes be necessary. He made the remarks at a “mini-congress” for French-speaking peoples held on the eve of the 10-day main meeting. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (C-LAU-7C-74-DS)
