Description:
Text transcribed from caption: PC-46504 ‘CRUCIFIXION OF MAN’ GENEVA -- In a Geneva studio, Guido Rocha works on his “Crucifixion of Man,” a work he says is based on the physical torture he suffered in the prisons of Brazil. Mr. Rocha was arrested for protesting against oppression, was tortured and then “acquitted.” He then fled to Chile where he was caught up in the military coup that overthrew the government of Marxist President Salvador Allende in Sept. 1973. Again arrested, he spent 40 days in detention at Santiago’s National Stadium before being released and admitted to Switzerland as a political refugee. A special scholarship to the School of Fine Arts in Geneva has enabled him to work on his “Crucifixion of Man.” When it is finished, Mr. Rocha intends to present it to the World Council of Churches as his way of thanking the churches for their assistance to Chilean refugees. Text transcribed from caption: PC-45993 EXCHANGE OF IDEAS TAIZE, France -- Near a cross on the grounds of the Taize monastic community, young people exchange ideas during the World Council of Youth. The three-day gathering saw 40,000 young people from 120 countries come together for fellowship and prayer. Rather than resolutions, plenary sessions, or committee meetings, the major events were the daily worship services -- moments of prayer, praise and testimony by youth as to how to live the Gospel in the face of exploitation, oppression, poverty, and isolation. The only thing close to a formal pronouncement to come out of the gathering was a “Letter to the People of God” issued on behalf of the young people. In it, the church was called to give up the means of power, the compromises with political and financial power, to surrender its privileges and stop amassing wealth in order to become a place of communion and friendship for the whole of humanity. Text transcribed from caption: PC-31747 LAPLAND CHURCH MEMORIAL TO HAMMARSKJOLD LAPLAND -- A suggestion proposed by a Laplander mountain guide, Andreas Labba (top), has been realized in the form of a small church built in the wild northern Scandinavia country and dedicated to the memory of Dag Hammarskjold, Secretary-General of the United Nations who died in a plane crash in 1961. A friend and companion of the noted world figure on many hikes into the Lapland mountains, Mr. Labba traveled to Uppsala, Sweden, for Mr. Hammarskjold’s funeral and made his idea known. Institutions, firm and individuals -- mostly in Lapland -- responded with funds and the small church, built in the triangular form of a Lapp hut, was raised. Artistic silverwork, such as candlesticks and communion dishes, were given to the church by friends of Mr. Hammarskjold. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (2-NY-10-D-64-NBM)
