Dr. Coggan chose the debate on the reintroduction of capital punishment to make his speech. He ended by saying, “Let there be punishment of the most severe kind for those who murder defenseless women and children, or who hold to ransom those whose way of life or thought they happen to oppose. But leave the final judgement of death in the hands where final judgment rests and where forgiveness can alone be found.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (PP-LON-12D-74-DS)

Mr. Solzhenitsyn was in Stockholm to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature he was awarded four years ago. After the discussion, Mr. Graham said: “Solzhenitsyn has the kind of intellect and moral courage that the world so desperately needs today. His grasp of both history and theology is amazing.” The evangelist was on the first stop of a trip to several European countries in which he planned to visit with religious leaders, including the new Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Donald Coggan. Text transcribed from caption: PC-46504 ‘CRUCIFIXION OF MAN’ GENEVA -- In a Geneva studio, Guido Rocha works on his “Crucifixion of Man,” a work he says is based on the physical torture he suffered in the prisons of Brazil. Mr. Rocha was arrested for protesting against oppression, was tortured and then “acquitted.” He then fled to Chile where he was caught up in the military coup that overthrew the government of Marxist President Salvador Allende in Sept. 1973. Again arrested, he spent 40 days in detention at Santiago’s National Stadium before being released and admitted to Switzerland as a political refugee. A special scholarship to the School of Fine Arts in Geneva has enabled him to work on his “Crucifixion of Man.” When it is finished, Mr. Rocha intends to present it to the World Council of Churches as his way of thanking the churches for their assistance to Chilean refugees. Text transcribed from caption: C-46209 ‘MODERN’ CHRIST FEATURED ON NEW MAGAZINE ROME -- The cover of a new Roman Catholic journal launched in Rome shows a long-haired, bearded young man, dressed in a light suit, white shirt and dark tie. A caption reads: “Look Jesus full in the face.” The magazine, called “Jesus” and devoted exclusively to the life and times of Christ, is published by the Society of St. Paul for the Apostolate of Communications (Pauline Fathers). It is a response to results of a recent public opinion survey in Italy of religious beliefs and attitudes. The survey showed that of a long list of famous people, Jesus was “most interesting” to older persons, while Karl Marx, Mao Tse-tung, Mohammed, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Mahatma Ghandhi scored better with young people. The Pauline Fathers expressed hope that their publication would “penetrate and make real the time and the world of Jesus, in accord with a spirit of critical investigation.” A conservative Catholic organization has, however, filed suit against the magazine, claimed the image of the modern Christ on the cover offends Italy’s state religion.
