NORTH CHURCH OF PAUL REVERE FAME #1529 BOSTON -- The oldest church in this city, Christ Protestant Episcopal Church is one of the historical landmarks of the United States; for it was here, on April 19, 1775, from its tall steeple, that the signal lantern told Paul Revere of the march of the British troops to Lexington and Concord. The famous phrase, “One if by land, two if by sea” referred to those lanterns. At that time the edifice was known as Old North Church. It was erected 1723 and has been used practically without interruption since the last Sunday in December of that year except for a period during the Revolution when the church was closed “by military necessity.” (one of a series) Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (EM-BOST-MES-3A-6-ROTO-A-E-O)

Text transcribed from caption: P-30489 300TH ANNIVERSARY OF INDIAN BIBLE CELEBRATED FALMOUTH, Mass. -- “Chief Flying Eagle” (Earl H. Mills, high school physical education director at Falmouth, Mass.), who is chief of the Mashpee Indians of Cape Cod -- last surviving Massachusetts Indians -- poses with the executive secretary of the Massachusetts Bible Society at celebration of the 300th anniversary of the printing of the first whole Bible in the western hemisphere. With the Bible Society official, Dr. Lawrence Almond, is his daughter, Priscilla. Dr. Almond holds one of the original Bibles, in the Indian language, which was completed in 1664. While the Bible, named the John Eliot Bible for its translator, was in use as late as the 1700’s, nobody today -- even descendants of the Mashpee Indians -- can understand the language.
