DIEGO -- Michael Newman, editor of the Southern Cross, San Diego diocesan
newsweekly, is joined by other Catholic journalists after he was ordained to
the permanent diaconate by Bishop Leo T. Maher in the Immaculata Chapel of
the University of San Diego. From left to right are: James Knudsen, a
syndicated cartoonist; Bishop Maher; Gerard Sherry, editor of the Monitor,
San Francisco; Mr. Newman, and Al Antczak, editor of The Tidings, Los
Angeles. Mr. Newman, the second editor of a diocesan weekly to become a
