CLEVELAND -- Protestant, Roman Catholic and Jewish leaders in Cleveland
cooperated in a one-week drive to get church and synagogue members to sign a
"Good Neighbor" pledge. The effort was sponsored by the interreligious
Greater Cleveland Conference on Religion and Race. Mayor Ralph S. Locher of
Cleveland is shown signing a proclamation calling for the voluntary pledges.
Looking on are from left, Father Vincent P. Haas, moderator, Catholic
Interracial Council of Cleveland; the Rev. B. Bruce Whittemore, executive
secretary, Cleveland Area Church Federation; and Rabbi Alan S. Green, Jewish
Community Federation. The pledge, in part, states: "I will support the right
of any law-abiding and responsible person of whatever race, religion or
national origin to move into my neighborhood." Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS
