Brent Eagen, chancellor of the diocese. Col. Salomon’s long career of public and philanthropic service was cited by Pope Paul VI when he conferred knighthood in the Order of St. Gregory the Great on the industrialist. The new knight is one of the few Jews to have received the honor. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (DP-SD-9A-74-DS)

Text transcribed from caption: C-46003 ANNUAL MASS AT ‘SMALLEST’ CHURCH BAYOU GOULA, La. -- Worshippers gather outside the Chapel of the Madonna, which is probably the smallest church in the world, for Mass on the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the only time during the year in which the church is used. The tiny nine-by-nine foot structure, located in Bayou Goula, a community 24 miles from Louisiana’s state capital at Baton Rouge, is so small that in addition to its altar, only a priest and an altar boy can fit inside. The approximately 200 worshippers who annually attend the Mass on the Feast of the Assumption must assemble on the front lawn of the tiny chapel and the altar must be moved outside. The chapel, which has been featured in Ripley’s “Believe It or Not,” was built in 1903 by Anthony Gullo, a poor immigrant Italian sugarcane famer. When Gullo’s son was gravely ill he promised to erect, as far as he was able, a chapel to the Madonna if she interceded for the youth. The boy did recover and Gullo kept his promise with the help of friends who assisted in building the tiny building amid sugarcane fields near the Mississippi River. By 1932, the original building had deteriorated and was replaced by the present one of the same size. Today it remains a simple, well-kept frame building with only a small cross and an arched doorway to distinguish it as a church. However, the more elaborate interior has paintings of saints and an alcove holding a glass-enclosed replica of Raphael’s “Sistine Madonna.” Years ago people seeking favors gave valuable jewelry when their prayers were answered, but this custom has long since ended. However, today about 70 jeweled pieces still adorn the blue sash annually placed on the chapel’s statue of the Madonna for the feast day Mass. William Spain, pastor of St. James parish in Solana Beach, Calif., celebrates a special trackside Mass at Del Mar Race Track for jockeys, trainers and track employees on Sunday following the last race. At his church, which practically overlooks the track, Msgr. Spain reports it isn’t unusual to find winning tickets in Sunday collections -- and some losing ones. Text transcribed from caption: C-45698 HAPPY DAY FOR EIGHT YOUNGSTERS NEW YORK -- While Confirmation is normally not an unusual sacrament, it is for a group of eight students -- all of them brain-damaged or emotionally disturbed children -- as they are confirmed by Auxiliary Bishop Patrick Ahern of New York during a ceremony in St. Eugene’s Chapel of Sacred Heart Church in the Bronx. The youngsters are children at the Murray Hill Classes, a nonsectarian private school for children who have been excluded from public school because of the severity of their illnesses. The school rents the chapel from Sacred Heart Parish and uses it as a classroom building. Father Joseph Gleeson (right), associate pastor at the parish, is a volunteer teacher in the school’s released time religious education program. It was he who prepared the youngsters for Confirmation. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (CS-NY-6C-74-DS)

An impressive crowd of 700,000 pilgrims poured into this village from all parts of Poland, many in cattle cars and trucks, others arriving on foot, to renew vows of loyalty first made by King Yan Kazimierz in 1663. The pilgrimage included the largest recorded gathering of Catholic clergy, among whom were forty-two bishops led by Cardinal Hlond and Adam Cardinal Sapieha, Archbishop of Cracow. Text transcribed from caption: ‘IRISH TRAVELERS’ RETURN TO MEMPHIS #c-3443 MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- For 75 years bands of roving horse traders traveled through the South, descendants of Irish who had emigrated from County Mayo in the early 1800s. Although they were commonly referred to as gypsies, the more enlightened Southerners called them “Irish Travelers.” Each year they came to Memphis for one day to hold their weddings and funerals. Although the advent of the automobile saw many of them leave the road, they still follow the business of horse trading throughout many towns of the South -- and gather in Memphis once a year. Here five couples kneel before the altar of St. Thomas church in a quintuple wedding. The five couples are (left to right): John J. Riley and Ann Theresa Carroll; James Carroll and Ann Theresa Riley; John Costello and Marie Costello (no relation); John Costello, a first cousin of the previous John Costello, and Mary Marie Carroll; Thomas Nelson and Betty Riley. Youngest attendant at the wedding was eight-month-old “Red” Nelson. The oldest was his great-grandfather, 87-year-old “Red” Nelson, a son of one of the original immigrants. Text transcribed from caption: PC-29923 IN MEMORIAM: RED VESTMENTS FOR MARTYRS SAN FRANCISCO -- Typical of hundreds of churches across the United States was this scene in San Francisco. On Sunday, Sept. 22, the nation’s churchgoers joined in memorial services for four Negro girls who died when a bomb blasted a Negro Baptist church in Birmingham. Here, at St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic church, the more than 2,500 attending services overflowed the building. They fell to their knees on the sidewalk during a Mass offered for the dead children. The priest wore vestments in the “red of martyrdom” instead of the black of mourning. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-9D-63-W)
