About this Collection

Conceived by journalist Louis Minsky (1909-1957), Religious News Service (RNS) was established in 1934 as an affiliated but independently managed agency of the National Conference of Jews and Christians (later the National Conference of Christians and Jews), and was dedicated to providing authoritative and bias-free news about religion and ethics to both the secular and religious press. This collection contains photographs documenting Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox, and Jewish groups. Coverage of Protestants (especially mainline Protestants) and Catholics constitutes the bulk of the images. View the collection guide to learn more. Digitization of some of the images in this collection made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Text transcribed from caption: C-30270 GIFTS TO BE REMEMBERED The Church was very much a part of the life of John Fitzgerald Kennedy. Above, the Kennedy brothers are shown as they presented a check for $1,178,000 to the then Archbishop Richard J. Cushing of Boston. The funds, from the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation, were used for four archdiocesan projects. The foundation was named for the President’s older brother Joseph, killed in World War II. In this photo, Ted Kennedy is at left, Robert at right. Below, the first Catholic president of the United States receives a gift from Pope Paul VI at Vatican City. The gift was a model of the Pieta, Michelangelo’s masterpiece which will be exhibited at the Vatican Pavilion during the New York World’s Fair. Text transcribed from caption: PC-30805 BISHOPS’ WIVES BACK INTEGRATION: TWO JAILED BOSTON -- Three wives of Protestant Episcopal bishops are shown as they boarded a plane in Boston enroute to Jacksonville, Fla., where they assisted in integration efforts. A Negro child wishes them bon voyage. Two of them were arrested in Jacksonville. At far right is Mrs. Malcolm Peabody, wife of the retired Episcopal Bishop of Central New York and mother of Massachusetts’ governor; she was arrested on March 31. At center is Mrs. John M. Burgess, wife of the Suffragan Bishop of Massachusetts and first Negro bishop of the Church in the U.S. Mrs. Burgess was jailed March 30 by Jacksonville police when she sought service in a motel cocktail lounge. At left is Mrs. D.J. Campbell, wife of the former Episcopal Bishop of Los Angeles.
