Text transcribed from caption: C-31870 REMAINS OF ST. FRANCIS VENERATED GOA,
India -- Archbishop James R. Knox, Papal Internuncio to India, incenses the
crystal coffin containing the 400-year-old body of St. Francis Xavier,
Apostle to the East. The remains were publicly venerated in Goa’s Basilica
of Bom Jesus where the body is permanently enshrined. The following day the
silver casket holding the remains was taken to the Cathedral of Old Goa where
the famed Jesuit missionary’s body was to be publicly exposed in connection
with his feastday, Dec. 3, and the 38th International Eucharistic Congress at
Bombay. Born in Spain in 1506, St. Francis preached in Goa, India, Ceylon,
Malaya, Japan and East Indian Islands. He died in 1552 on an island off the
