Vatican City -- Amid the grandeur of St. Peter's Basilica's main alter, Pope Paul VI addresses a huge congregation at a Mass marking the 1,000th anniversary of Christianity in Poland. Thousands of Polish pilgrims from various parts of the world were gathered in the basilica, along with many church and other dignitaries. Pope Paul criticized as "not justified" the Polish government's refusal to permit a papal visit to millennium observances.

In an address, later broadcasted by the Vatican Radio in many languages, the Pope stressed the Church’s “understanding of the world of labor.” He exhorted Catholic workers to become apostles of the Church’s social teachings, to be alert to un-Christian influences among their own ranks, and to fight against temptations to become lax in practicing their faith. Looking on is Father Fabiano of the “Fatebene-fratelli” Italian order of priests who take care of the sick in Rome. Edmund, who suffers from a disorder of the pancreas, was on his way to the famed shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in France. Pope Paul, after embracing the boy, recited the Lord’s Prayer with him, and promised to pray for him. The Pope also asked Edmund to remember him in his prayers while at the Marian shrine. He gave the boy a Rosary and imparted a special blessing on him and his mother and relatives in Australia. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-5C-64-NAB)

Description:
Text transcribed from caption: C-31011 POPE RECEIVES JORDAN’S KING VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI greets King Hussein of Jordan outside the papal library where they conferred for about 20 minutes. Only other person present with the Pope and Arab monarch at the audience was Magr. William Carew, Vatican staff member who served as interpreter. Vatican sources said the audience with the King was regarded as partly in reciprocation of the hospitality he extended during the Pope’s pilgrimage to the Holy Land last January. Pope Paul presented King Hussein with a mosaic of St. Peter’s Basilica and a gold medal of his pontificate. The King wore the insignia of the Order of the Golden Spur which the Pope conferred on him during his Holy Land visit. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-5C-64-NAB)
