He is shown here as he addressed the students at a Washington rally. Father McGowan, a former missionary in Bolivia, was suspended from his priestly duties after he himself went to Cuba as a reporter for The Catholic Worker, a periodical published in New York. The suspended Maryknoller commented that there is religious freedom in Cuba. “All the churches are open. Priests can preach. Anybody can go to church,” he said. KING MEETS WITH PRESIDENT WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is escorted by Vice President Humphrey to the White House for a meeting with President Johnson to discuss the Negro voter registration drive in Selma, Ala. After the conference, the noted Negro Baptist leader said the President “made it clear to me that he plans to offer legislation to Congress specifically on voting rights.” Dr. King, winner of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize, spent five days in the Dallas County, Ala., jail. Vice President Hubert Humphrey was sworn in minutes earlier by House Speaker John McCormack of Massachusetts. The Bible which Mrs. Johnson held had been given to the President’s family by his mother, Mrs. Rebekah Baines Johnson, 13 years ago when they moved to the LBJ ranch in Johnson City, Texas. The President is shown seated at right of the aisle in front pew. The unusual photo was made through a window of the cathedral. Similar requiem services for the world's last Orthodox monarch were held in New York and other cities. Archbishop Iakovos of New York, head of Greek Orthodox in North and South America and a member of the U.S. delegation at the King's funeral in Athens, proclaimed a 40-day mourning period. Mundt (R.--S.D.) is honored at the annual convention of National Religious Broadcasters at Washington, D.C. Dr. Eugene Bertermann, left, president of the NRB, presented the citation which lauded Sen. Mundt for "distinguished leadership" in the Senate and for bringing "sound religious principles" to federal government. Broadcasters heard an advertising executive explain the effectiveness of Mennonite Broadcasts' policy of sponsoring 30-second religious messages as radio advertisement. They also heard Dr. John W. Bachman, chairman of the board of managers of the National Council of Churches' Broadcasting and Film Commission, call for cooperation between liberals and conservatives in religious radio and television. Text transcribed from caption: PC-30390 CANDLELIGHT SERVICE FOR LATE PRESIDENT WASHINGTON, D.C. -- President Johnson, the First Lady and their daughter, Lucy Baines, hold lighted candles during memorial service at the Lincoln Memorial ending a 30-day period of official national mourning for the late John F. Kennedy. Thousands of other persons also held flickering candles at the service and heard the Chief Executive give a moving eulogy to the assassinated President Kennedy. Paraphrasing Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, Mr. Johnson said: “For let us here on this Christmas night determine that John Kennedy did not live or die in vain, that this nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom and that we may achieve in our time and for all time the ancient vision of peace on earth, good will toward all men.” President Johnson called on all Americans to use Christmas as a time of thanks-giving, hope and dedication.
