CHRISTCHURCH, N.Z. -- Bound for the coldest regions of the earth, the
Military Vicar to Catholics in the Armed Forces is outfitted by a U.S. Navy
supply man. Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, draws his
equipment from C.B. Gilbert, storekeeper second class, at Christchurch, N.Z.,
before undertaking his flights to Navy and scientific stations near the South
Pole. On his annual visit to servicemen, Cardinal Spellman crossed the
international date line, thus was able to celebrate Masses on two
Christmases. He visited personnel at McMurdo, Byrd and South Pole stations
involved in Operation Deepfreeze. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE
