Description:
Text transcribed from caption: C-3111 POPE PAUL VI’S FIRST YEAR (First of a Series of Two Panels) VATICAN CITY -- On June 19,1963, Giovanni Battista Cardinal Montini, Archbishop of Milan, was elected Pope and became the first pontiff in 350 years to take the name of Paul. Top row, left to right, shows the Pope’s coat of arms; the papal tiara being placed on his head by Alfred Cardinal Ottaviani during the coronation rites in St. Peter’s Basilica on June 30; his first visit outside of Vatican City -- the first of many he was to make in following the example of his predecessor, John XXIII; and Paul VI’s historic meeting with President John F. Kennedy (July 2). During that audience he praised Mr. Kennedy for his efforts for world peace and racial equality. On learning of the President’s assassination on Nov. 22, the pontiff broadcast a special message praying for the peace of his “elect soul” and lauding his devotion to “the great causes of humanity.” Bottom row, left to right; first picture shows Pope Paul at a special audience in October with Protestant, Eastern Orthodox and Anglican observers to the Second Vatican Council. Early in his reign he announced his decision to continue the Council inaugurated by John XXIII and stressed that Christian unity was one of his major concerns. Second picture was taken in November as he led some 180 members of the American hierarchy -- including Joseph Cardinal Ritte of St. Louis, Albert Cardinal Meyer of Chicago, James Francis Cardinal McIntyre of Los Angeles, and Francis Cardinal Spellman of New York -- in prayers for the success of the Council. This occurred shortly before Pope Paul formally ratified the epochal Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy which was approved by the Council Fathers at the close of the second session. The third picture was taken in January as the Pope left Rome for his momentous pilgrimage to the Holy Land. He became the first pontiff to ever to travel by air and the first since St. Peter to set foot on soil hallowed by the footsteps of Christ.
